Santa Fe's off road
Submitted by 7739ian on Sat, 2011-04-09 00:17
This is going to leave me wide open - but i am currently looking at buying a cheap 4WD - having been made redundant i don't have much to spend but i want to keep beach fishing. I can either blow about 8k on a risky older vehicle or take over the wife's 2004 Santa Fe. It has a 4WD drive badge on the back but is a viscous drive all wheel drive unit. I believe some Santa Fe's had a sort of real 4WD drive set up but not this one. Are these beach capable or am i going to have problems? Any advice is most welcome.

What locations are you
What locations are you intending to take it....... some places are very boggy and may do more damage to the vehicle than a more robust one.
Also consider that if you may run the risk of damaging the car - meaning more $$$$ to repair. If you are redundant and cash is a little tight maybe stick to safe havens (such as Ledge point, Lancelin, Moore River) where the beach is firmer.
I have a Forrester and am very careful where I take it myself.
Just a few tips.

you could be better off
you could be better off buying an oldr 4x4 that you dont mind getting salt water on. there are heaps of bargains out there just gotta go looking for them. a 4x4 ute would be ideal to carry all the fish back home

just flogged my Jeep grand
just flogged my Jeep grand cherokee for $9,5K and that had all the fruit of a 4wd, low ratio and was dam good on the beach,
If I was you I'd look for second hand Jeep ( moms taxi one), they easily are found for under $10k these days and good over all off road vehicles, but still have good road manners for day to day driving

I can't comment on later
I can't comment on later model Cherokees, but I had a 98 XJ and wouldnt recommend one to my worst enemy. Never-ending repairs, ran hot in sand after numerous repairs and drank like a fish.

santa fe's are pretty good on
santa fe's are pretty good on the sand as they are pretty light weight, i had one and also a tucson for work, they both got worked hard and didn't miss a beat.
I have to agree with tony about the jeeps tho, a cherokee can be had for cheap dollars and they will go anywhere (thirsty buggers tho)
I currently have a grand cherokee (ex halliday shopping trolley)surprisingly the v8 is not as thirsty as the straight 6 and power to burn
cheers
