Schooling Snapper sounder shot

Stumbled across this photo from a couple years go where we cleaned up on pinkys for a few weeks. Some weeks they were there sometimes nothing sometimes we sound around the close vicinity and find em. Bottom was flat as. A mate seemed to think the bottom was cockle shells etc that bought them in. Behind Rotto area

Thoughts?

I've just asked Ryan as he's in the shop at the moment and he said there's a lot of flat coral out there. Thats where the Biomas of pink snapper are and yes they move around.

 Thanks mate. Is there

Thanks mate. Is there settings that can make the coral show up as colour? I always interpret the bottom shown in the photo as sand. Unit hds10 with standard tranny.

Info

No probs, you can adjust the upper and lower limits to zoom in on the bottom part of the water column which will help.

For more info on fine tunning your unit I would ask the guys at Chivers Marine (Site Sponsor) as they are right into Lowrance units.

Not sure what you call the setting, but quadfisher's comment is in reference to the fish symbol ;). Very scary stuff.

arghh fish ID - my pet hate  - numbers relate to the depth of the "fish" (though not doubting they were snapper).

Love the fish icon:) every time I bring someone new on the boat I point out all the fish icons that appears, makes me look pro. And if we don't get any fish that day I can say' we saw heaps of big fish on the sounder, just weren't hungry'

I have no idea what I am

Thu, 2013-08-15 13:39

I have no idea what I am looking at....but.....am I fair to assume that there is a school of fish (snapper) at least 10m "thick" or high on the bottom. And using that logic the right side of the sounder shows that its somewhat 50m+ in size.

good question

Good questions Michael, I'm trying to learn how to interoperate what the sounder is showing me and it's always appreciated when members put up pictures with an explanation of what you are looking at

Your around right as far as

Thu, 2013-08-15 16:19

Your around right as far as the height of the school goes but as far as the width there is no answer from the info displayed on your sounder (structure scan etc excluded).  Its not showing anything as far as distance it is only showing the info as it scrolls across the screen.  This is relative to scroll speed only (how fast it goes from right to left) which can be changed in settings. You should consider the extreme right of the screen as what's under the boat NOW and the rest as history (as in a time line) further to the left = further back in history

Theoretically it could be say 20 snapper moving around in and out of the beam (and thus individual snapper being "read" more than once if the boat is stationary or moving in the same direction and similar speed to the school).  If a fish or object remained in the beam it will generally show as a constant line.  If the fish/object remains in the beam however raises off the bottom so will the line and vise versa if it goes deeper.
