Sharks and Shovelnose from the beach

Hello one and all,
I am heading to Perth on holiday from 24th Decemeber to 1st January and then to Kalbarri from 2nd January to 7th January.
I have never caught either of the above species, and would love to do so. Some folks have already been very helpful with information, but i was wondering if any can advise on any good locations to catch the above fish from the shore, or could avise me on good baits, rigs etc.
Cheers,
Tim

Hi Tim,North Mole in the
Hi Tim,
North Mole in the night will be a good starting point.
If you prefer beach fishing then there are few many options around metro.
My favourite spot is dog beach next to floreat drain.
Bait, I have always caught sharks and shovelnose with heirring and tailor fillets.
Goodluck fishing around perth.

Many thanks Mallesh. I've had
Many thanks Mallesh. I've had a look on a map and can see North Mole lighthouse. Is that the spot? If so, it looks like you can park all the way along North Mole Drive, which is handy. Are there any particular spots to go for, or are they all good along that road?
I can also see floreat drain just off the west coast highway. As i'll only have a hire car and no 4x4 will i be alright parking by the West Coast highway?
Thanks again,
Tim

Yes you are correct. Mate you got to fish at the tip of the mole. either side of the light house is good, it depends on the wind direction.
Also regarding floreat drain there are parking bays availablle not far from the beach. but its not safe to leave your car in the night.
Hope this information helps and also talk to people at the spot and they will give you some good tips and information.
We people at Perth are very helpful mate.
Cheers!!!

Briliant reply, thanks. Do
Briliant reply, thanks. Do you just catch your bait on the night you fish, or do you take it with you?
Sorry for all the questions, but i may only get 2 nights fishing and want to make the most of it!!

Saturday sharks
Tim, Its good to use live baits, but its not possible always.
please have some dead baits as a reserve and for sharks and rays you dont need to have live bait.
I was at the mole yesterday and i had 5 runs in couple of hours and just 2 was landed and other 3 where un stoppable.
Nothing major, a big shark and an eagle ray. I dont know what the other 3 where but the last one was big, it kept going on a 20+ kg drag and straightened my hook.
so there are lot of sharks and rays at the moles, send me a PM i will see whether I can catchup with you while you are here.

First trip to the Mole!!
Hello folks,
Had my first trip lasst night for the sharks and headed to North Mole. It was absolutely packed. Fish from dusk right through til dawn, but all i managed was two dropped takes on whole dead mullet fished on sliding rigs. Smaller baits were gettin knocks, but nothing decent showed. I did try to catch some livebait but only caught blowfish.
One more trip to go to try to catch my shark and shovelnose!!
Thanks,
Tim

Was down there couple nights
Was down there couple nights ago, it was fully packed some guy hooked up to stingray twice within 30mins after busting off, not alot of happy campers as his drag was pretty loose, just before sunset is a good time to start fishing.

Kalbarri
With the river down you should have a ball in Kalbarri should be plenty of big croakers about and theres always a good chance of a shark

Secret Harbour
Had a session in Secret Harbour last night off the beach. By the time the family obligations were complete, i didn't get there til 11pm. I managed two small whiting and two crabs whilst trying for a livebait, but by the time i packed up at 4am i had nothing on the big mullet fillets on the other rod or the whole squid i put out after i took the small fish snood off.
Don't think i'm gonna see my shark or shovelnose now unless i'm in luck in Kalbarri or squeeze one more trip out in the Metro area!
Out of interest, when i fish for these, i'm using a 4 or 5oz star sinker, and casting the bait maybe 70 meters out or so. Is that how everyone else fishes?

Shovelnose sharks like
Shovelnose sharks like scavenging close to the shoreline so 70 metres is quite far out, if anything i would up the sinker weight and chuck it close in like 30 metres tops, cleaner surf also helps instead of merky sandy wash.

Cheers Dicey. The water last
Cheers Dicey. The water last night was quite coloured with sand, so i'm going to blame that rather than my own angling ability!

Well guys, holiday nearly
Well guys, holiday nearly over and it looks like i might have failed (unless i can beg one more trip tomorrow night in Perth before we fly out the next day!). I had a run at North Mole, but my 30lb mono was cut on a rock a few seconds into the fight. Then in Kalbarri, exactly the same thing happened. So i bought some 60lb braid and 100lb shocleader to replace the 70lb i had been using, and got a bite. After 10 mins of fighting the shark (guess it was, very heavy, fast runs, lots of head shaking) the 100lb swivel snapped. Oh well!
Just wanted to say thanks to all those who helped me in my quest, and here's hoping i get the pass for one more try!!
