Shimano 4000FX

Hi everyone. I got a shimano FXL a while back when I hardly did any fishing. It came with some 4lb mono that's really bad and is fuzzing up in a ball in a number of places. I'm going to unspool it and put on some 6lb or 4lb braid and try to make it a better casting reel. Is this a good idea? Or should it be used for heavier stuff than bream and flathead fishing in the river?

FXL4000
Not sure if this is the FXL 4000?? if so then the recommended line weight is 8-12 lbs. 6lb mono should be alright and it should work well for Bream and Flathead.

It may feel a little heavy
It may feel a little heavy but will be fine if bait fishing for bream and/or flathead. Probably not the best for luring though.

So what do u recommend using
So what do u recommend using it for? Maybe I will spool it with 10 or 12lb braid for some beach fishing for the lighter stuff.

Yeah that would work. As I said it could be a backup bait combo for the river.

Awesome. Because I got one
Awesome. Because I got one size 2500fx which was $20 form bluewater 50% off at the time. Spooled with 4lb braid so that's my first bream reel but then there is a reel with 12lb mono, 16lb mono and one with 8lb mono. The size 2500 is good because it casts a mile but I need another bream setup for dad to use. Do you think I should match up the 2500 with a 6'6" rod that is 4-8kb (I think), an 8' 2-6KG rod that is basically a noodle because of its height and weight. Or a 7' rod that is 3-6KG which I think I should put it on. I'm looking for better casting distance.

Depends what they are made
Depends what they are made of. The 8' sounds like fibreglass so that probably wouldnt be your first choice. I would personally use it on the 7' 3-6kg as you mentioned assuming that and the 6'6 4-8kg are made of the same material. If any are graphite I would use that though as it would most probably be lighter than the others and more comfortable to use. A 2500 sized reel would balance better with a lighter rod (I use a 2500 sized reel with a 1-3kg rod) but any of those would get the job done.

5'6, a bit short but doesnt
5'6, a bit short but doesnt bother me. I also have a heavy 8' 1-3kg fibreglass rod that I use for soaking baits with a 3000 reel.

Line fuzzing up.
Hey Lachie,
When you say the line is fuzzing up, do you mean like very fine fury balls of the line in places? If so you may want to check the guides on the rod you're using the reel with as I have a shimano taipan rod with penn applause 2000 loaded with 8lb pretest mono that I mainly use for squidding, and I started noticing fine fury ball forming on the line at times. I thought it was the reel doing it but it wasn't, when I had a good look at the rod I found top guide on the rod was chipped and when retrieving line it was being damaged by the sharp edge!....Have since replaced the rod tip and all is good again!...just a thought.
Cheers
