Simrad EVO3 vs Raymarine Axiom Pro
Submitted by Shik on Sat, 2017-10-07 16:13
We are very close to purchasing an EVO3 NSS12 for a new boat but the Raymarine Axiom Pros have also just come out. I really like the Simrads but the Raymarines seem to have a better 3d system with the autostabilising gyro. Sounds like the 3d will still not work very well deeper than 30metres though.
There is very little real world experience with the Axiom Pros given how new they are but has anyone had a detailed look?

Axiom
Ive been trying to find some real world reports on the axiom pro, but havent had much luck.
There are a few on youtube. Youve probably seen them, but links below.

There was another one off the coast of NZ someehere, but cant find it.
Love to know how either one goes if you get it.

yeah I have seen that one.
yeah I have seen that one. It looks good for 50m+ but then at the end of the video you see how flat the water is.

yeah
that the kicker. It was real flat so no idea how well the AHCS (or whatever they call it) works.

axiom vs evo
I have the simrad evo 2 with structurescan 3d with latest updates and the axiom 12 rv. The Axiom beats the simrad 3d in every way. Not only does it work deeper in side scan mode, the gyro stabilisation of the raymarines transducer works impresively. I have used the axiom to 60 meters the simrad 3d structurescan dies from 35 meters on the transducer is not gyro stabilised so it does not perform well in choppy situations. The speed of the processor in the axiom leaves the simrad for dead in gps updating etc. Build quality in the raymarine is vastly superior. Raymarine support thier products much longer than navico who see 5 years and then no further support service or parts wise for all of their recreational lines. The simrad 3d will not show fish as well as the axiom rv which locates fish off to both sides of the boat the side. This is a real game changer and is a cheaper alternative to the mighty furuno 3d unit . Apparantly furuno collaborarted with raymarine in the development of the furuno unit according the techies at C.H. Smith Marine. The axiom pro has the same sidescan as the standard axiom so no benefit here. The axiom pro has the 1kw power in the standard chirp mode which is more powerful but at a heafty price premium. Finally it has been reported in the hull truth that the U.S coast guard bought 2000 raymarine axioms for thier vessles i cant think of a better endorsement. It should be noted that simrads evo 3 has some software bugs still to be ironed out in true navico style where streams of updates come to get thier units up to speed. The evo 2 is working well after years of updates and may be a better option at a cheaper price bearing in mind that it will only have a few years left in tech and parts support. Finally raymarine is bring out updates to its model prior to the axioms with the latest lighthouse 3 software, some thing that navico will never do as they want you to buy new models.

The raymarine Axiom Pro also
The raymarine Axiom Pro also has 3 chirp channels, You can use the 3D transducer on one of the transducer Ports. This has a traditional 600 High Chirp and side/down scan and 3D. The second port supports dual chirp so you can use a pair of Chirp transducers like say B175M and B175L. All can be viewed similtaniously.
The Evo 3 is 2 channel only so if using a sidescan transducer like totalscan or LLS2 on one port, then you only have one channel available on the other port. So for example, if using a TM265 chirp transducer, it needs to be split into 2 plugs and sidescan has to be unlpugged to use both channels. THe Evo 3 also does not have 3D or Gyroscopic correction data so the inferior LSS3D needs to be added at another $1200 for 3D support.
That's my understanding after looking at the Axiom Pro units and talking with the Raymarine reps at the boat show.
Hope this makes sense...

Regarding the Simrad
Regarding the Simrad connectivity, I was looking at the StructureScan 3d which comes with the transducer and the module. I believe this connects over Ethernet to the MFD so you could run it at the same time as a dual-chirp transducer.

This is correct but I've heard that it is only good for about max 30m in ocean water on a good day...

here is another video of the Axiom (non-Pro) using Realvision 3d in 66m of water. This looks to be in rougher conditions and moving - bottom looks pretty jagged but still OK.

How do you find the axiom using it as a conventional sounder.
The only drawback I see with these is not being able to add another transducer as there is no extra port.
Any chance you could post some screen shots of the 3d and normal 200 Hz next time you are out ?
Amazing $2000 difference between the 9 and the 12 inch.

axiom 3d
Sadly i am 65 and not very tech savy . There are plenty of screen shots of the axiom in use. One of the best can be found on a web site called panbo with independent reviews. Check out the U.K post on fish arround a wreck site in the north sea . I purchased my unit based on the vision in this post and can verify that the unit works as well in our waters. The down vision and standard chirp work excellently. The raymarine version of chirp worked well from day 1 unlike the navico version which took countless updates to come good. Dont take my opinion check out the many posts on the hull truth panbo etc. Check out raymarines web site for screen shots.

Crano, I'm very close to
Crano, I'm very close to pulling the trigger on the pro version of these. Much more expensive but has the extra port which is a dual channel 1 Kw port. I can't afford or fit any bigger than the 9" unfortunately.
Squalis,
Thanks for posting the Panbo link. Good site!

Thanks for the reply.Another couple of questions, What sort of speed do you think you could get a reasonable 3d picture at in 35m and from what you have seen do you think you would see a car sized object in this depth ?
Gruntre69 Aparently there is a y cable available that allows you to run the realvision transducer and certain other transducers with simrad connections.

axiom
The deeper you go the slower the speed of the boat for the best vision with max detail. Its the same with all of the manufactures side scans. The gyro in the raymarine will allow faster speeds. Typically in 35 meters 10- 15 knots is the best speed ,you can go faster but you will loose small detail like fish. As for bottom terrain this will still work fine and an object the size of a car will show up at higher speeds. The garmin navico and hummingbird will die faster than 10 knots in calm water in much shallower conditions ,i have owned and used them. Apparantly the furuno 3d will operate faster and deeper at a much higher cost. The raymarine is best bang for the buck. Have a look at Moose Marines web site for videos made by Anthoney the owner who is a sonar guru.

We ended up going for Axiom
We ended up going for Axiom Pro 12" with 1kw transducer and the standard all in one. Fingers crossed. Now we just need the boat to go with it.

im trying to decide between the Garmin and axiom pro.
how much did the axiom and transducers cost?

I've decided on the Raymarine 100%
But I cannot decide the best arrangement for the Transducers for the Axiom Pro. My boat has a flat keel and I am getting RV through hull transducer/s and I will start with a B175M for the 1Kw with a view to an additional B175L later should I wish to venture out deeper. The flat keel is wide enough to fit the B175M 0 Degree but there is also room in the bilge area to fit the 175's (20 degree) just to the sides.
So I could put the B175M 0 degree in the middle and use a pair of RV320 off to the side with space for 175L on Port side later
Or I could put a single RV300 in the keel and put the 175's 20 degree off to each side. Possible less expensive due to a single RV.
I can make both of theses work with the trailer rollers but I really want to make sure that the RV unit/s don't create any turbulence or air bubble paths towards the 175 locations.
I'm drawing up a to scale plan view of the keel today so I can draw a few models and make my decision. I want to order next week..
I'll post up some versions later for opinions.

These look like a game changer
With the capability built-in, not reliant on extra ( expensive) modules and multiple transducers. Plug n' play. A quick search of the net finds the whole shooting match, gyro-stabilised TM xducer and all, , in 12" for $4600 all up. "Only" 600w, but that is more than enough for anyone but a dedicated deep dropper.

My Axiom Pro 9 is arriving
My Axiom Pro 9 is arriving next week with the pair of RV220 thru hull transducers. Ended up ordering the CM265LM with it so I'll have high at 600w and medium and low at 1Kw... Very exited...

Yes mate, pocket mount id
Yes mate, pocket mount is the best solution for my hull and I'm going to do it.
I've got the transducer modeled in CAD now and am going to 3D print it for the plug. The dimension data published is reasonable but not absolutely perfect. I've fired something off to Airmar but not sure what they'll come back with. That transducer won't be here until Wk3 Nov and it would be good to print the plug and make the pocket before the Ducer arrives but it would be very annoying if it didn't fit when it arrives. I've scale checked their published Data and it is good and toi scale so I've measured the missing data by scaling and it looks very good.
I'll start a new thread on the install. Southcity on here did an excellent post on a pocket mount into the same exact hull so I'm going to have a close look at his before I start. I'll see how I go with posting up a detail on the install but I have a habbit of getting stuck into projects and forgeting to take all the photos.
