SITE HELP - Posting Images Introduction

With the kind forbearance of Adam, Andy, Tim and Colin (Hayes), I thought I'd put a step by step guide up for posting images. With the software this site uses, it's a little trickier than some other fishing forums - but it's not that difficult if you follow the following:

Bare in mind, that any subsequent site changes on image handling may require changes to these procedures.

TECHNIQUES AND TERMS

For those inexperienced with computers and the world wide web, I'll try and explain a few things without boring you senseless.

To display images on this site, the images that you have stored on YOUR computer need to be hosted (placed) either locally on the Fishwrecked site (this site) or on a remote site (remote to this site) that allows you to store your images.

CONTENT - A term that describes any material, including images.

HOST - A collective name for a party, together with their hardware and software, that provides a service whereby you can store CONTENT from your PC on another device on the world wide web.

LOCAL HOSTING - The image/s is/are uploaded from your PC to the Fishwrecked site and you use the interfaces and attributes (software)of this site to display the image/s.

REMOTE HOSTING -   The image/s is/are uploaded from your PC to a remote site (like Photobucket, Image Shack etc) and you imbed code in your post to display the image/s. Basically, the code has syntax (language and order rules) that are recognised by this site and across the world wide web.

URL - Uniform Resource Locator - This is usually a string of alpha(bet) characters that uniquely locate where any content (including images) are stored on the world wide web. Conceptually, it works just like your property address. When you imbedd the address of a website in a post the software code on this site recognises the syntax starting with http and automaticaly links to that address. It finds that web site because the URL is unique. (I won't go into the hows and whys because that way too much info!)

THREAD - Collective name for one or more posts that make up a Forum Topic. These can be text or photo (image) posts.

UPLOADING - Transferring a copy of content on your PC to another site on the World Wide Web.

CONTENT TYPE

Basically, there are three types of content on this site:

Forum Topic - This is a text post and optionally, can have one or more images displayed within the text.

Photo -  This is an image post and optionally, can have accompanying text.

Videos - These are members videos that are uploaded.

So, images can be posted as a photo and you add text, or embedded in a (text) Forum Topic (Thread) post - either the initial post or subsequent posts within the thread.

SINGLE OR MULTIPLE IMAGES?

You can post one single image or multiple images in a THREAD depending on the situation.

If you are starting a new THREAD (post), then the easiest way to acheive this is by posting the THREAD by use of this site's CONTENT - Photo posting facility.Refer to the thread SITE HELP - Posting Single Images Via New Thread for assistance.

If you are posting multiple images, or wish to add (IMBED) one or more images into a new post in an existing THREAD, then there are several alternatives available:

  • OPTION 1 - EXTERNAL IMAGE LINKING - You upload your image/s to a another (image hosting) site like Photobucket or Imageshack etc, then link to the/those uploaded image/s. DOCUMENTED.

  • OPTION 2 - INTERNAL IMAGE LINKING - You upload your image/s to a this site, by creating one or more separate PHOTO posts (as described above)  then link to the/those photo post/s - via the posts URL.

  • OPTION 3 - INTERNAL IMAGE INSERT - You upload your image/s to a this site, by use of this site's 'Insert/Edit Image facility.

    Thanks Adam, Sandy and Russ!

Always nice to get the bossess nod of approval Laughing

As time (and my boss (the wife) ) permits, I'll start on multiple image posting by both this site's software and using a remote host. But I won't go into detail on the various free image hosting services as each site has slightly different methods. Perhaps I can tackle that more conceptually.

As you can see, using this intensive documentation methodology, even the first simple single image method is quite lengthy. So the more complex, step-intensive multiple image posting will be even longer.

Adam - perhaps when finished we could split them up? Or, does Drupal support bookmarkers and place holders like standard HTML and MS Word documents? That way we can have hyperlink navigation within (this) a single post?

I honesty wasn't seeking compliments, just that I'd had so many PMs asking for help with posting pics, I thought it was worthwhile doing this.Besides, it's always nice to give something to such an excellent site and help folks out. Cool

But thanks heeps for the positive feedback. :).

I'm a person that actually likes documenting things - that's probably makes me sadder than a nerd Foot in mouth LOL
