Smith amj 52ex? or not
hey guys,
i know this has kinda been covered before, but i am out at the moment looking to get a new jig rod.
i am currently looking at the Smith AMJ 52EX, but when i went to have a look at them there wasnt any in stock. i didnt want to go ahead and order it in without being confident that this is the one i want as i dont have a chance to load it up and see how it feels. and i dont wana make the tackle shop go out of their way to order it then i just say no thanks.
from my own research, reading through forums, i have seen one where the guy took it out first time on a charter and it snapped (he claims it was used properly)
From your experience, have you ever tried this rod and what are/were your thoughts on it or is there some other rods for this sort of weight that you reccomend
Im looking for a rod to go with the stella 20000 with PE6 line, so basically something i can use for the bigger sambos and for when i go up north.
thanks

Amj
Hey samnut,
Ive got the 54h with a stella 8000 and have tried the 52ex.In fact it will probably be my next purchase.I found the action not quite as slow as the 54 but none the less a very nice jig rod and comfortable enough to jig all day with enough power in reserve to turn some heads.
I also was a lot more impressed with the action when i fished with it than when i loaded it in the store.
Also i heard the rod that snapped on shakiri was a WGJ not a AMJ.

Great rods
The Smith AMJ range are lovely rods to use!. They are fairly soft though compared to a lot of other rods with the same gram rating but in saying that they have caught TONS of BIG fish!. If its the Stella 20K you are using then I would be more inclined to look at the Smith WRC 55 Nirai as its a better match for the bigger reels (Stella 20k and Salty Z6500 Expedition) and has got more backbone than the heavy AMJ.
Brillant rods either way mate.

It was on my short list
when I was looking at a new heavy jig rod.
The only negative I had against it is length - I personally wanted a slightly longer rod than 5'2.

queensland mate
fishhead.com or fishhead.com.au ????
ordered 2 smith rods from them so far, heaps cheaper than campbells both delivered within the week, no probs at all postage costs are minimal 10 bucks or something.
it is a heavy rod...hmmm how do i say - its obvious its designed for BIG fish, i love it but a 52ex might be more versatile if you want to catch light, midsize and some heavy fish
Only used it one day so far but I was knackered jigging with it all day (only 1 hook up) so 7 hours trying to get a strike had me using another 45Lb size setup for a bit of a breather a few times through the day

Availablity
Its always good to support your local tackle stores when purchasing gear but if you can't find a Nirai anywhere you can always purchase one from NZ online or there a plenty of places in the US that sell them if you don't mind buying gear from overseas.

embroided/sticker logo
cool. i did find one on an internet site...they had 2 different types of Nirai's. one was embroided and one was a sticker logo. sticker one was $770 AUS and the embroided one was $980 AUS with $25 postage.
he told me there was no difference between the two except the logo...have u's heard of these and if there are any differences...because for $300 im not too sure if it is just the logo

Sammut, this is the same
Sammut, this is the same with the Smith Komodo Dragon, It used to have the embroided logo, then changed to the sticker type, so i would say there should'nt be a problem.

yea jdm's pricing is crazy! but none in stock. i asked if they were getting any more in but they told me to call the Smith Rep in Australia haha
but yea, at the moment just waiting for a reply from saltywater tackle about availability postage then should be good to go. to save $350 its worth it...thats the line for the stella 20k.
