Smaller species. I find those two the most versatile plastics which usually score a fish.
Mcarthy's 7 inch bullhead minnows in chartruese, hot orange and pink for demersal, the 5 inch finesse minnows in similar colours and including the olive colours from the shore and the Gulp 5 and 7 inch jerkshads in nuclear chicken, sweet and sour chicken and white.
Just bought a pack of the Zman's & will give them a go in Exxy next wk! Been told they are much the same as snapbacks which are a favourite. I prefer the McArthy 8" bull heads for demersals.
Squidgie Flickbaits, Shads or Wrigglers for me I just change the size's and colours to suit my target species, caught everything from Whiting to Saily's...

Skippy: Berkeley Powerbaits, 3-5", in a neutral colour like brown or green. There's a tackle shop in Mandurah that's getting rid of Instinct paddletails, a dollar a pack, six tails to a pack...the skippy in the Dawesville Cut love these and they're pretty tough so you can catch at least half a dozen 35cm+ fish on one before it starts to fall apart.
Proper Salmon/Snapper: Snapbacks/Basstrix/Squidgies in 5-7" sizes, white/whitish.
Rat Sambos: Any colour, 5 inches and above.
Dolphinfish: Any small, 2-3" grubs...different colours work on different days, finicky bastards!
All my placcie fishing is done with the lightest jigheads I can possibly use, given the conditions, and, more importantly, IMO, using the lightest possible FC leader. I believe leader that's too heavy will interfere with the action of the tail and it won't look natural enough...mind you, how "natural" is Nuclear Chicken, which is a very productive colour!
great thread for a placcy newbie like me. We used nuclear chickens for the first time a few weeks back and got heaps of attention but didn't land anything decent on them, did hook up to something that just kept going - felt like a ray (we later got an eagle ray on mulie). I figure if a ray picks it up, then my action is not quite right. I can find heaps of info on action during retrieve, but what I want to know is what you do for demersals in deeper water when there is no cast to speak of and the line is basically straight down. Is it just the same action, but without the retrieve - i.e. jig/jerk/flick in whatever pattern you do and then let it sink again???
mate , you can leave a gulp sitting still on the bottom and it'll get picked up.
bloody rays tho. i bothered to pick up some gardie live baits once , put one down on a good looking lump and it got smashed immediately by a bloody ray.

McArthy 7" jerk minnow in the fanta colour is a fav, or the paddle tails is whatever colour I grab out of the bag for all demersals.
I love Gulp Sandworm for KG Whiting but have a bag of McArthy Bristleworms for next time I chase them on plastics.
But if everything's getting torn up you can't beat a 5" Snapback for staying on the hook.
