Solo fishing
Submitted by Dirt on Sat, 2014-04-26 19:08
Ok I know solo fishing is not ideal but I am getting tired of being let down by people saying they are keen and then pulling out last minute leaving me stranded and missing out. I have a 6.35 metre carrabean hardtop with a reliable fourstroke and have know issue headin out with me and best deckie, my bull terrier, if fishing alone I would wear an auto inflating PFD just in case, what is everybody thoughts on this

I would be putting a life
I would be putting a life jacket on the dog as well.... but that's just me. If the shit does hit the fan I know I would end up doing something stupid if the dog was around.

just take care and use your
just take care and use your lanyard while motoring?
If you plan on doing it regularly maybe think about buying one of the wireless lanyards so you can wear it all the time?
Give a man a mask, and he'll show you his true face...
The older you get the more you realize that no one has a f++king clue what they're doing.
Everyone's just winging it.

Works for me
I fish alone in my boat 95% of the time. I dont have to worrry about looking after any one else & I catch more fish. My boat is only 4.5 Mtr so easy to launch & retrieve by myself. As for the safety factor, i dont worry about it too much. I am very respectfull of the ocean though & I pick my days carefully.

Fore sure
For sure CP I learnt to respect the ocean long ago, I have had a boat for nearly ten years now and know
what it's capabilities are. Not looking to be a hero just getting tired of being let down and missing out on fishing.

Many people do it mate
Many people do it mate including myself can't rely on deckies these days, if you pick your days and your confident enough to do it and be safe you will be fine

Put a life jacket on. I
Put a life jacket on. I would not go out too far if it was me on my own. Only go out into deeper waters with a Deckie
Fishing the swan for bream, it's just an obsession

Don't see the difference
Weather you are 5 , 10 or 30 mile out you won't swim to shore so as long as you have all you safety gear prepared, pick your conditions log in then distance dosnt really matter to me

There's a bit of difference
I agree that you're probably not going to make it shore regardless of the distance. Theres a bit more boat traffic closer in so safer for that reason & because i have a small boat, its better to be able to get back in quicker if the weather turns bad. I regularly venture out 12 - 15 km without getting nervous. I would go further if I had a bigger boat.

Common
Seems like I'm not on my own, I enjoy jigging for demersals , trolling for marlin, mackeral ext and chasing snapper in the shallows, I'm allways keen to get out and guarantee I'm reliable if anyone ever needs a deckie or vice versa,

+1 solo. Was headin out solo
+1 solo. Was headin out solo in the dark of night only a few months after the purchase of my first tub. Use your head, if it feels risky or a bad idea, it probably is.

Yeah, I was fortunate to get
Yeah, I was fortunate to get a few pointers (and spots) But to the point of care when solo, he told me about a bloke he knew that died fishing solo, they found the boat and a tuna still hooked up to one of the rods, found the bloke later, makes you think hay......

Yeah I know
I knew about that bloke but all I can say is at least he died doing something he loved. I'm well aware that accidents can happen just as they can on land, when your time is up it's up. All you can do is take all precautions, be smart , don't take unnecessary risks

My only fear goin solo is not
My only fear goin solo is not getting a nice 1 shot retrieve lane jetty approach when its busy haha. Mindarie sucks when theres a southerly blowing a bit blows the nose over and the crusher has a bit of inertia with a full ballast

Never do it outside
Going solo is something I never do outside in open waters. Spent too long at sea and have seen too many simple things that can turn things pear shaped in seconds so unless I have a decky its either no go or up a creek or inside the Fascine.
Some may call me a week prick but then I will still be alive when they are missing.

Solo
Been to the Trench and FAD's solo a number of times Dean. Is all about picking the conditions. Would not have liked to have been solo today btw.
I always use the lanyard for peace of mind as well.

solo has a few down sides,
solo has a few down sides, no body to share the fuel costs with, and no one to share the good times and back up the stories!

Note To ALL
I am the same solo,in saying that any time any other solo boaty wants to go out they are always welcome to join me in convoy out on the ocean .I dont have any problem with safety in numbers or any pinging issues.
Dont need to fish in back pocket but knowing there is a another boat 200 or 300 mts away and has a radio is nothing but good in my book. Also do over nighters to the Rock.
Next trip WED 30TH Two Rocks.
