souder power supply

I recently upgrade ny sounder to a 1KW Furuno 585 and the last few trips out the voltage indicator on the screen kept getting lower during the drift after only a short time and indicting there was only 8-9 volts to the unit and when restarting the motor it would turn off ,  my initial thoughts were the twin 1000 cca batteries werent charged or were failing at 2 years of age or a bad cable connection from the batteries through to my dash power blocks.  Saturaday i pulled out both batteries and recharged and then went through all the cable connections which all apeared in good order, the power cable to the dash is extra large , being a sparky i dont wont volt drop whilst running 2 x radios , sounder and gps.

Sunday after all gear reconnected we went out to the barge s with the FW crew and even after the 1 hr run out on my first drift the voltage had dropped from 12.2 volts down to 9 volts, i did what your taught not to do and used both batteries at the same time and still had the same problem.

Last night i went through the dash board connections , power supply block had 12.4 volts and 12.2 volts after the on/off switch, which i replaced, i then direct connected the sounder to the power block  + and - and found the 1.2 mt pre made lead supplied with the sounder was the cause due to the very small cable diameter not being able to carry the load.  i cut the lead down as short as possible and re soldered a larger diameter cable and fuses as per the pre made lead came with and now have a continuoas 12 .4 volts at sounder display and unit doesnt drop out when starting motor

volt drop is the problem

I'am a auto sparky check the diameter of your power supply and earth cables from your battery to your supply and earth blocks at the helm should both be about 8b&s cable and also check the inside of your battery terminals.

Dasha i have installed 2 x

Tue, 2010-10-19 09:11

Dasha i have installed 2 x 10 mm flex cables from batteries to helm rated 50 amps i am told , i have full 12.4 volts at helm but only 8-9 volts to sounder when operating , cut  sounder lead back and i have full  12.4volts to sounder volt drop appears in sounder pre made lead and length, all power blocks insulated from hull being alli

yep,

i followed all that. interesting that the lead supplied by the manufacturer did not meet the requirements of the unit. perhaps you should be compensated for that, if its still under warantee. it would be interesting to hear if others with the same unit have had similar probs?

BTW, why dont you use both batteries at once? i do almost every time. never had a problem with them both going flat at once. i run sounder, plotter, VHF, and stereo, plus any lights (anchor, nav, switch and deck lights) if fishing at night.

Similar Problem

Tue, 2010-10-19 12:29

I've just installed a 585 and a 1KW Transducer. Now every time I start the right motor the 585 turns off. Could increasing the diameter of my power leads potentially fix this problem?

Both Batteries

Tue, 2010-10-19 12:34

The reaso for not using both batteries at once is, if you flatten them both at once you are stuffed and won't be able to restart your engine. Leaving one battery isolate gives you the exta charge needed to fire the motor.

Most pro boats will run on one bank of batts on today and the other bank tomorrow . leaving plenty of charge if needed.

Lots of people will do the initial start on both and will switch to one bank as soon as they have reached their destination, that way leaving a fully charge spare.

Power issues

Tue, 2010-10-19 12:51

Run a house battery for all electronics (excluding motor) etc off a voltage relay (about $120) - wont drain main engine batteries, all starting and charging issues gone.

supplier

Tue, 2010-10-19 12:57

going to drop in and see the supplier tonight and get some feed back on the Furuno lead supplied with the unit,  Soupster , i watched the display on the sounder it gives you the current voltage to the unit ( motor off )  and it starts at 12 volts then over a short period goes down to 9 -  8 volts then the alarm beeps away, this stopped once i upgraded the lead,  will let you know of the outcome

Scotto   as above for the leads , also as Carnarvonite said always keep one battery in reserve , was out with my mate and one of his battery's cell colapsed and then drained the good battery in minutes, pull start 200 HPDI nope

be very careful about

Tue, 2010-10-19 16:01

be very careful about switching the battery's about.

i was told that if my motor (honda) was running and i changed between battery's , i would blow the engine management computer.

dunno how true this is , but i'm not gonna try and see.

Volt Drop/Change in load

Tue, 2010-10-19 17:03

Switching batteries when the engine is running shouldnt be any different in loading to using an anchor/pot winch with the engine going - both can cause large voltage and load variation.

Ive changed over batteries on all of my outboards whilst runnin, obviously not to the OFF position without issue. (Not on any Hondas tho......)

Agree with Graham, I don't

Tue, 2010-10-19 16:15

Agree with Graham, I don't know enough about electronics so I use the opposite battery each trip and get very good life out of the pair of them this way.

Brocken Wire

Tue, 2010-10-19 16:49

You have obviously fixed the problem by replacing the lead to the sounder .

Possibly a broken wire just making contact in the old lead .

The current draw to a sounder is minimal so the wiring supplied with the unit will be fine handling the load ......it must have been damaged somewhere or in replacing the wiring you have corrected a faulty or loose terminal in the plug on the unit.

keeping batteries charged

Tue, 2010-10-19 16:54

http://www.biasboating.com.au/p-408-dual-charging-cluster-bep.aspx

this is the best way to run 2 batteries, you never have to switch to the second one it will charge automatically when the voltage drops then switch to the main starting battery until the second battery drops again. you only switch if you need the extra boost from a second battery (run your electronics off battery 2)
