South coast swords?? After some info to have a crack at them
Submitted by Chris fish on Fri, 2014-11-28 22:20
Hey guys. I'm chasing some inform on swords and I know a few guys on here have longlined before. Rigging and setups I sort of have an idea what I'm more after is what sort of depths where they common? Are they found on the contours so more on the walls or sea mounts/ drop offs or doesn't that matter and just stick to the temp breaks?? I want to give this a good crack just trying to pile together a heap of info and go from there
Thanks in advance

I know they have been
I know they have been targeted and caught on the South Australian side of the Bight before (probably around 10 -15 years ago at least). From memory fishing at night with live squid rigged with glow sticks in deep water near the edge of the shelf.
that's about all I recall.
Shane Mensforth at SA Angler (SA based fishing mag) may know more if you care to pop him a message. He may be able to get you a copy of the story that appeared in the mag.

I can tell ya
their is a sword fishing industry right here at Fishing boat harbour. Well there was definitely 10 years ago. They would fish 200 odd ks out of Freo and sometimes catch a tonne or two.

yeah i know the info on the boats fishing wide of rotto, they fish temp breaks well out to sea but at certain times they set right near the shelf and still get good fish and i know that at least one of those boats has fished out of albany before and did very well without going to far off the shelf just not sure if they fished the temps again or along the walls/ canyons

ive seen a couple of photos
ive seen a couple of photos of about 8-10 fish at albany but not sure how old they are or what boat or anything, the only bit of info i could find was they did the usual night drifting and apparently wasnt far out so im guessing 6-8 hour drive to the shelf on a comercial boat would put them in the area im looking at getting to

Plenty there in the winter
Plenty there, we unloaded maybe 100 tonnes over 98-03, via Bevans Seafoods to US and Japan

would love to not fussed how
would love to not fussed how either way but i guessed they would be easie to target after dark when they come up. dropping baits down deep during they day sounds like you need to be in the right spot but as i know little drifting after dark i thought wuold be easier to cover more ground
