Speargun and sharkshield

G'day fellas,

Since posting about spearguns and also reading up on sharkshields myself and a mate have decided to go ahead and purchase one of each.

In regards to the spearguns we are looking at getting a couple of Rob Allen guns.  Can anyone recommend where to buy these from in Perth?  A few dive shops I've looked at don't stock this make - neither do they have much of a range of guns:(

With the sharkshields can I ask which model most of you guys use?  There's two models that I've seen which are;

The Shark Shield FREEDOM7
Shark Shield SCUBA7

http://www.sharkshield.com/Content/Products/

On the above link it mentions that the Sharkshield FREEDOM7 is the preferred product for scuba divers which seems a bit weird as I thought the SCUBA7 shark shield would be more suited to divers?

 Any feedback would be appreciated:)

cheers

Wayne

Can't really comment on the shark shields having never used one. Mate of mine uses a freedom7 but it's never turned on. Last weekend he did turn it on next to a 8ft grey nurse for almost nil effect, I was watching. Bronzies didn't like it though.

Freedom 7 is compact and small, perfect for freediving, never seen a scuba7. Not much point getting a scuba7 unless using compressed air?

You shouldn't be looking at paying much more than 375 for a RA Sparid of any size. if you can't find one for 375 pm me. I have bough both of my RA's down here in Bunbury/

Cant fault it, havent been bitten yet! Get the occasional kick from it but its not bad and its worth it as your hovering around doing your safety stop to have some sort of peace of mind.

I use it mostly for diving but I like the option to also use it for other water sports, also putting the plate on your scuba tank seems like an extra hassle compared to just strapping on a leg rope.

I got mine brand new off ebay from a dive store in queensland, saved a few hundred from the best deal I could find in perth.

I've got a RA Sparid 1200. I was going to get the 1100 as I thought the 1200 was going to be too long but it's perfect. Only used it at Exmouth so far shooting reef fish though so it'll suit your needs off Perth.

Sparids a good combo.

I assume you mean following RA guns as sparid is a model of the RA.

Scorpia is base. Would be better of with Sparid.

Tuna, Caranx etc. are essentially exactly the same gun with different shaft/rubber combinations for different applications.

Tuna should have a larger diameter shaft than the Sparid and use a 20mm rubber instead of a 16mm. If you bought one or the other, you can mix and match shaft sizes with rubbers down the track.

I have twin 16's on a 1.2 RA with 6.5mm shaft and it goes good, quick through the water and accurate.

Recomend & use the Shark Shield FREEDOM7. It's attached with all dives i do and used it a little while ago in Exmouth with some big sharks around and they disapeared.....they work!

Straight hook stuff, not my area but a few mates use Roby!

Hi fellas,

Yeah was refering to the all RA models.  I've since spoken to a guy (josh?) from bluewater tackle in Scarborough - it seems they have a good stock of RA guns so I'm going to take a drive down there.

At this stage I think i'll be going for a 1.2m RA gun - though not sure wheather to stick with the sparid or the Tuna.  Appartently the TUna model can take two rubbers by where the Sparid can only take one rubber - is it a worthwhile feature having this ability?

Good to hear Ryan - yeah will be ording a Shark Shield FREEDOM7 sometime this week:)

cheers

He might mean tuna uses a larger dia shaft, therefore you are able to power it up.

If you put too much power through the smaller dia shafts they whip out of the rail and become inaccurate and slow. 2 14's or 2 longer 16's on a Sparid is fine.

If you're north, don;t forget to try Hookah Dive too, they have good prices on spearo gear, usually best in Perth.

Give the Water Police a ring and see what brand shields they use.Saw them in action when they had to do the recovery from the barge collision up here about 2 years back. There was 2 big tigers around the 10-12 foot mark and the other was 8-9 swimming around the wreck, they shot through quick smart when the divers entered the water with the shields turned on.
After all its only the cost of a call that may put you onto the best there is,hope this helps

Tue, 2009-05-26 22:10

just checked out the hookah site - seems like they have a fair bit of stock! (http://www.hookahdive.com.au/spear.htm)

One thing I'm a little unsure about is the reel setup on the spear guns.  The RA sparid guns I've seen don't seem to have much line/wire between the gun and the spear.  I asuming you then buy a reel to add on?

Eg, was just looking at this video... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LD0dd42QtqA

....see the reel at the start of the clip.  Without such a reel wouldn't the gun just get ripped out of ya hands?  Or is this where you go for bit of a swim;)?

People usually spear with either a float or a reel. If you fish a float you attach that to the gun (or the shaft only if you're free-shafting).

That pic from hooka dive is ancient, they have way more stuff in stock than that.
