I use 2000 grade to remove very bad bore water stains on cars and scratches that doesnt come off with shitloads of wax, makes life easier. I haven't done it with my reels but it works with cars. If you're not sure just get the lightest then work your way up. But make sure that the surface is always wet. For a spool lip a few drops of water will do.
I've dont this with my stradic after a mate dropped it in spectacular fashion.
I think I started with 200 as there were a few nasty nicks and worked my way up to 1200 before it felt good enough. I figured the salt on braid would buff it up after. Came up really good.
Only thing I would recommend is go slow and all by hand. No electric sands / dremels etc.

When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:
n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or
n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.
