Starting Out

Hi, have been cosidering doing Scuba for a while and just starting to get serious about it and was just wondering in Perth which stores are the best? Also would be interested in doing Spearfishing and was also wondering if there is anything to keep in mind in terms of sharks etc and what a reasonably priced speargun would be.

Finally is it better to purchase the gear out right in a package or accumulate it as you find stuff you like and hire the rest.

Thanks

I have just recently done my padi and started a thread you might find helpful http://fishwrecked.com/forum/88 diving / spearfishing.... I live in the rockingham ares and I have found those stores a fair bit cheaper than Freo... Scubanatics and Bell scuba... use the stores to try on different gear / brands and just keep an eye on the quokka, gumtree and forum for sale sections...

Shit scared of the idea of sharks myself, but once you are in the water you tend to forget about it.... Fully recomend scuba though- I love it!

hey jackt

Hey jackt can't really comment too much on dive stores as i've only ever been trained through two stores NOR and everyones opinion will vary on experiences, what area do u live in? best off hiring your gear first up, atleast doing your course with hire gear. Make sure diving is for you and your comfortable with everything which i'm sure u would be. Once your through go out and kit up. If your confident you'll dive often and your gear will get used.I'd go out and get the full kit in one hit, too much farting around going back and forward to dive shop hiring bits and pieces. I reckon if your only gonna log ten or so dives a year stick to hiring, If you go spend 2 grand or more you'd have to knock out around 30 or so dives before your infront cashwise on hiring.

I did the maths on hiring and

I did the maths on hiring and you do need to do a lot of dives to pay it off (not so many if you spread it over a few years though), but i've found the major benefit to buying instead of hiring is that you have the gear all ready to go all the time. If you get a call from a friend or someones looking for a dive buddy you're reading right there, so you end up getting out a lot more as you have a lot more freedom. That benefit is certainly worth a bit and shifts the balances IMO.

If you want dive gear also have a chat with Chris at divetub. Has some really good gear (zeagle) at a lot less than you would pay for an equivalent setup by other brands. Customer service is next to none too :p. Free try dive gear so you can see if you like the gear first too.

Divetub rocks, I dive nearly

Divetub rocks, I dive nearly a full set of zeagle these days. As good a breather as any other gear on the market, lots better than most but very cheap service costs ... and he pricematches US pricing.

I reckon get your own gear, you just don't get invites to dive much if you're not ready to go all the time ;)

get your own gear and then you can get it set up for you just right, yeah it will cost at the start but it is yours and only you use it unlike hire gearand then there is benefits like others have said, as long as you can get the air you can dive any time you like
