Stock Yard Gully Caves
Hi all, just wondering if anyone has ever been to Stock Yard Gully Caves inland of Green Head before.
I have a heaps of pics and information about it i got off the net, but just wondering what the track in is like from personal experiences?
The info i got says its 4x4 only and its sandy for about 4km from where the gravel ends. Doesnt say anything about letting tyres down. Just wanted to know if i could tow my little tinnie in there with my 4x4?(on the way back from Geraldton).
I am guessing people have towed camper trailers in there?????? Just want to see if its worth the effort of checking them out, with having the trailer in tow as a restriction. My tinnie trailer is quiet heavy duty and i have taken it on some extremely mean sandy/muddy tracks before without incident.
Alternatively if i cant take the trailer in, anyone live in Green Head and willing to babysit a Tinnie and Trailer for a few hours?
Thanks, Buz.

reasonable
he track is reasonable if you come from cervantes side , there is a good gravel road before it turns to sand and a few rocks which if taken slowly can be done with ease. the track from the north has alot more rocks and bigger ground clearance is required but is easy if taken slowly, its a good site to see , enjoy

Thanks just dhu it,
You reckon a tinnie on a decent trailer if taken slowley would be ok?
Clearance isnt really an issue, have the Hilux, and the trailer has light truck tyres on it which makes it higher than most tinnie trailers.
Yeah was just planning on going in and coming out of the south track. Sounds like the north track out is a bit of a mission. Guessing with the rain up there the sandy track should be a little more compacted? Hopefully the cave isnt flooded out though.

no problems
if your going through the south track you should be fine as theres alot of sand tracks all in good order and few patches of small rocks , keep your speed to suit the trailer and i could not see any problems

Worth the trip
If you head to the left when you get there, the creek or stream disappears into the side of the hill like a railway tunnel. You can walk through it for about 200m and it comes out the other end. It is pitch black (take a torch) and there is a bat colony on the roof half way. The ground is sand and either dry or ankle depth water (great fun).
Now if you head right, it is far more of an adventure (not a family walk) Same tunnel type thing but slimy rock falls to negotiate and it goes in 150m with no light at the other end so turn back. Great fun if you are with a couple of mates and all have torches. Cheers Pete

Thanks for the tips and advice guys. I'll see how i go for time on the way back from Gero as to whether or not i go see it. At least that way if it goes pear shaped i have already done my fishing trip and on my way home
Seems to be around 4km of sandy track to get it once it leaves the gravel. Might unhitch the boat and leave my other half to guard it while i go and do a recce of the track just with the Lux, if its all good i'll come back and hitch it up and go in.
Thanks again guys.

I drove it as year (I think)
I drove it as year (I think) and it is 4x4 only, however, I did not have to let my tires down. Pulling a trailer in and out would be abit much though.
I suspect that if you have a hitch lock, the tinnie would be safe enough at the end of the gravel track, or just stop in and ask the farmer there if you could leave the tinnie there for a couple of hours. His house is right at the end where the gravel road ends and the sand starts.

Cheers Alfred, was actually considering doing what you suggested and see if the farmer is home when i go through.
In my experience NOTHING is safe to leave on its own 'locked up' away from home(even at home never 100% truly safe). Especially at the end of a gravel track in the middle of nowhere.

Probably flooded at the moment and not worth the effort, you could get a tinny down the track ok, the last 200 mtrs is a bit rocky and narrow though. I wouldnt attempt walking through without a torch apparently those sink holes inside end up flowing out into the ocean off Greenhead

Walked thru
it in the summer time (also in summertime you have to be careful of quicksand) if you have kids/wife there is a tiolet there as well. yes must take torches, we had a adventure and followed the eletricity poles from Indian Ocean Drive, opposite and down to the left a bit of the caravan park in Leeman, a must is a 4x4 doing that ended on a track which got us there, then back in to the caves, had a couple from England sitting in the back, they couldn't believe the kangaroos, wild pigs dung heaps, emus, rabbits and wild flowers on the track, but wouldn't advise this track when raining, as it had been raining and the mud had dried, but some good bush bashing in the Hilux to get there, interesting to say the least, took twice as long but was good fun. Think you can come in from the Eaneabba Road from Indian Ocean Drive as well, this track we went on a big no to the tinny.
