plenty of herring , squid at canals normally ... if you can cast to the sand patch heaps of whitting . caught a few big sambo's off the rocks there too using live herring under floats (gets the squid going to) .. gear for light stuff, i use a 9fooot flick rod (wilson life fibre) and a little 2500 reel 8lb braid ... heavy gear is a alvey 651c on a wilson 7 wrap ..
hope you get a few

I climb down at the back of the bridge and cast out in to the fast water coming from under the bridge with a under weight muile
And then i count to 5 and wind in slowly, But lots of rocks and weed so stay abovt that if you can

Bridge
I've seen people with TLD 25's ballooning and only catching wrasse once i have been there once and it was great first i tried where you said and did not catch anything so because it was a 4m swell i saw a gap in the seaward side rocks where i think bait was getting wased in the fast flowing canal and first cast i scored myself a 3kg skippy and a couple of 1kg+ tarwine.

Success
Never had any success shore bound from Canal but have got a few salmon/herring from trolling around through the moorings down to the north point of the outer rock/island.
The only time I had any sort of success is from the outer north rock by using the dinghy to land on the rock and fish from a high ledge on the outside.Hooked in to some sambos and huge stingrays
Only ever got herring from Sugarloaf so gave up trying to fish it also can be too dangerous at times. No fish is worth a life.

sugarloaf
fished the front of sugarloaf for many years main catch is always herring but have picked up the odd salmon ,very hard to get up the rocks and you do not go down to water under any conditions as its is very slippery & the current will take you under the front and then its all over .many people have lost there lives here so if a decent swell running go home .if you do go do not turn your back on the sea and dont go alone and if you get washed in your only hope is to try to swim out & around to the south good luck.
