Sunday Night Rescue

Eight rescued from sinking boat

PHOEBE WEARNE, The West Australian May 28, 2012, 5:11 am

Eight people were rescued from a sinking fishing boat about 1km off Hillarys Boat Harbour last night.

A Water Police spokeswoman said the Whitfords Sea Rescue received a distress call about 7.30pm after the private boat struck the Boy in a Boat Reef.

The crew took the people back to the boat ramp at the marina.

St John Ambulance crews attended but no one required hospital attention.

The cause of the crash is unknown but enquiries are continuing.

The 9.5m boat sank but attempts will be made today to recover the vessel.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Vessel did not log on. Did not radio Mayday. We got phone call from one of the passengers wive's (who was at home) advising vessel had hit the reef. Initially told only 4 onboard but when rescue boat arrive 8 onboard.

Find it hard to work out how you can hit Boyinaboat reef which is 100mtrs off the marine wall with all those markers  to indicate clear passage.

Me thinks alchohol was involved.

Good work

Good job, its always great to hear that another successful rescue has been carried out. Shame that because they are in a big boat they think they are bullet proof and don't need our services until too late.

One of our crews had to run down to Turtle Bay to take a young student off the sail training ship Lleuwin last week and run him in to hospital with a broken arm, thankfully most of it in daylight  and excellent conditions.

Probably right but

I reckon itd be better not to speculate unless facts are known. Pretty distressing situation for all and an incorrect assumption on a public forum can cause all sorts of unintended consequences

cant believe they never even

cant believe they never even contacted rescue themself, to hear about it from a wife at home makes me think their radio might not have been working and they didnt have the rescue phone number.

good to see all were safe but that is an expencieve exersize for the boat owner. maybe he wasnt reading his gps right and didnt know the area.

maybe it just came down to carelesness

inexperience

Thu, 2012-05-31 07:07

this is what happens when you put inexperience and mix it in with a boat! seen it too many times! yeah i can drive a boat! obs not. Sorry guys dont mean to be out of line but you might as well start handing out skippers tickets on the back of wheeties packets! Its a joke how easy it is to get a RST! Considering what you have to go thru to get a commercial master 5 ticket i think there needs to be a stricter involvement on getting a licence to drive a boat. There is more to driving a boat than just starting the key and putting it into gear and taking off! Glad they are all okay but when are DPI gona learn and realise that its not a game!

Shouldnt have. I got my rst

Shouldnt have. I got my rst automatically because I had my tl3. You just needed to send them the number off the tl3 ticket. But agree the tl3 was way more involved and would be a much better course.

Ticket

Fri, 2012-06-01 20:53

Before the RST came out they put out notices that all those with skippers tickets from TL3 up plus RSTs from other states would be recognised, all you had to do was forward a copy of it to DoT and a new one would be issued so you must have missed it. With my MC5 all I had to do was record the numbers and issue date  to get the new one.

an hour

Sat, 2012-06-02 07:50

when i got my RST it was an hour before i had to jump on a 1.5m cumberland powercat and take it to adelaide for a doctor that bought it from here. it took me 20mins for the written test. then quick dash down to canning river. half hour for the boat test done got my certificate. Went down to the boat jumped on and off i went. lucky for me i did my MC5 as well so i was pretty proficient on vessels. If you are in charge of a vessel you should know what you are doing and how to navigate read nav charts and be proficient on a boat.

Hmmm  "We got phone call from one of the passengers wive's (who was at home) advising vessel had hit the reef. Initially told only 4 onboard but when rescue boat arrive 8 onboard."

Who wants to bet the wife thought it was her husband and 3 mates onboard and the other 4 were female (possibly earning a good hourly rate)!!
