Surf gear and Alvey

Fellas.... I have been looking at buying a 14ft, 5 piece, Poseidon 5 Gold class surf rod with the 3 tip sections, does anyone have any feedback on em? also as they are a low mount rod I will neeed to get an Alvey and was looking at the C51C5. I wind with my left hand so was wondering if it is possible to swap them over or do you have to buy a LHW model? I have a nice graphite surf rod with a Spheros reel which does me fine but last week I hooked up to a big (big to me anyway) shark and it made piss out of me so I want to get a more heavy duty setup.
Cheers - Winta.

Hi there Winta
Few comments - Poseidon is a South African import rod. They are excellent. Friend recently bought one and he's loving it. The Poseidon spin rod is not meant for an Alvey reel. When you cast, the line will form large loops which will catch on the rod when casting. They eyes on the Poseidon spin rod is also to small in diameter for the Alvey and it will sound like a screwed brush cutter when casting. You run the risk of the loops catching your top hand and cutting you badly. My friend mounted a Sealine bull on his and spooled it with 300m 50lb braid. The reel has 11kg drag pressure which is probably more than what you'll be able to sustain on a 14ft rod. He runs a 9m 120lb leader of the braid. He casts a 8oz weight about 100m avge into strong wind. He is wearing a rigger glove when casting cause the line is hard on the index finger. I am sure that you can change the handle on the sealine bull reel to suite left hand. With the spare spool and lighter tip he easily changes to a lighter setup. He landed a big bronzie on the outfit. If you go a bit shorter rod (depending on your build) you'll be able to do some heavy plugging and lure casting. IMO

hmmm ah well that throws a
hmmm ah well that throws a spanner in! cheers for the reply though.. A mate put me onto the rod from fishingtackle.co.za and for 180 bucks I thought was cheap, I am waiting to hear back about shiping still, and I really like the idea of the changable tips. After looking at alvey reels on the net I really like the idea of using them also so I don't know what to do now... I have a finn nor 8500 which looks similar to the sealine bull and has 60lb drag so I could maybe match that to the rod.

The shipping of the rod puts
The shipping of the rod puts it close to the price you get them for in AUS. I talked to the distributor here. He carries heaps of stock so if you break a section you can get it from him. If you buy oveseas, you might have a problem. Its also better if you buy it local for after sale service. You might have a problem with the deep short spool on the finnor for casting. Give it a go in before looking at another reel.

Hey mate have a look at the loomis and frankling shockwave rod. It is a south african rod to and it comes with 3 tips as well. It has high mount and i have a sealine on mine and cast 100m ok. And its about the same price if you buy from SA

overhead
why not consider an overhead reel? in theory in overhead is able to cast further than a spinning reel, and should have ample drag power.

Alveys need to be modified
Alveys need to be modified inside with the gearing to make them L/H. I had some gears to make the change to L/H here once, but I'm stuffed if I know where they are now. And yes, the 651C5 is the deep spool version and the one to go for.
Cheers

Yes they are definately not
Yes they are definately not designed for alveys. Better off buying an alvey rod here as pretty much noone else in the world uses them. You can always put a higher mount reel seat on if you find it trouble, should be very easy as the butt section on the poseidon has no guides on it. Otherwise if your unco like my cousin is and cant cast lowmount spin. Look up a breakaway cannon. I just ordered one for him $20. Otherwise overhead all the way!!!!

Awesome rods absolutely love
Awesome rods absolutely love mine! That said though if its purely for really heavy work maybe look at the poseidon XH or loomis sharkey or something, just that little bit more backbone I reckon. Personal preferance though. When I got mine it was only $40 more to buy it local compared to importing it.
I dont think you would regret making the switch to overhead either....
