Don't worry about chasin muddys,

In the deeper parts of the swan, in winter time, we get the Atlantic king crab, and opelio crabs. Much better eating than the muddys that we get in there. Plus you've also got a chance of a trevella or bass grouper whilst you're soaking your pots in between the moorings.

Good thing too scotto, the Swan is much calmer than the Bering Sea.

Plus it's not long to go before the annual grander blue marlin run in the river, between the windan bridge and Tonkin hwy overpass.

Cant wait!

ive heard there are some monster bass groper in the wrecks at Mosman bay , ive tried for them but you cant stop em on 200lb braid. I think they eat mudcrabs because we used live muddys for bait last time.

has got some rare Mudcrabs. A few years ago I have seen them caught. Never many, odd one here and there.

Havent heard about any and 2 Pro mates havent seen any in a few years. They use traps so are the ones to ask.

Supect it had something to do with a strong leeuwin current a few yrs back.

Never heard about it in the swan.

Kalbarri I hooked one on a gang chasing tailor, and they arent an infrequent catch.

I've heard of them being caught as far south as Bunbury. But I doubt it would be worth the effort to target them specifically. Just an awesome bycatch while netting for blue mannas I believe. I wish I could get an accidental bycatch like that...one day

I recall that now. A mate from Busso was fishing/crabbing there and saw one caught. Time flies but I think it was about that long ago when Mandurah also had a few.

I for one would not hold a mudcrab like that, even with gloves on. If its been chilled or dead OK, but  I always tie mine up.

Im a slack shit though - 2 cable ties for me.

Been bitten/grabbed by a baby mudcrab and that was enough. Wouldnt want Grandad's claws near my fingers

Mud crabs

Mon, 2014-06-30 16:09

Going back 10 or so years Moore river held good numbers of mud crabs we went up there on a semi regular basis and got a feed but you would only get them at night.

We were very conscious of trying to preserve the fishery and only kept big males and threw all females back regardless but word got out and the place got raped and pillaged and now guess what.

NO MUD CRABS any more in Moore river.

Quite a few caught in the Peel last summer, must have seen nearly 10 different photos of them, one group even had 2 with their bag of blueys. From what I saw the mouths of the Murray and Serpy were the most consistent areas

Southern Mud Crabs

Tue, 2014-07-01 06:32

This comes up quite often.  Approx 10-15 years ago there was an aquaculture mob who set up at Moore River trying to do mudcrabs.  Big storm goes through wipes out the aquaculture facility then carries on southwards down the coast dropping mudcrab larvae(?).  Mudcrabs are seen for the next few years on and off all down the coast apparently as far as Walpole.

As the crabs grow, get taken/naturally expire, numbers decreased until they were unable to reproduce and they fell away almost completely. I believe it is more of a case that they can tolerate the southern conditions but not flourish or the original population from the storm was not large and so spread out that they were unable to breed effectively.

Has anyone else heard this story? My source for the story is in the WA aquaculture industry and has been around the traps for some time.

PS, Am I the only one who thinks its a bit silly to only keep big males and throw back females regardless?

You are not alone Byran.  I’ve been diving the Swan river for near on 20 years.  Diving these days, 90% of Blue swimmer crabs seen would be female.  When it is mating season, many females miss out on the action; also remember that the male spends up to two weeks with that one female!

Because of the above observation, I only take female bluies…plus they taste much better!

I have not seen a mud crab though, but if did, would leave it.

Cheers Pete

you take one female thats 180,000 to 2 million possible eggs gone

So how do the females get fertilized if there are no males?

Tue, 2014-07-01 14:54

Do you only take big buck dhuies?

The general logic is

Tue, 2014-07-01 17:35

Quite simple really, 1 male can fertilize multiple females. If there is 10 females and 1 male, that male can slay all 10, and we will still get the reproduction.

In the swan, drop netting, between dec and feb, I personally would encounter 1 female to every 20+ males. I rarely keep females unless it's been hard going. And, without blowing too much wind up my own skirt, I catch A LOT of crabs in the swan during season.

And back to the original post, if kingfisha1 wants to target muddys in the swan, then that is his right to do just that, but I will not refrain from sarcastically informing him that he has more chance of getting a blowy from a unicorn.

I have no idea about the swan

Tue, 2014-07-01 15:42

I have no idea about the swan populations. but certainly doesn't seem to ever be a problem with big blues in the peel any year of late.

If the pop does get to 10 - 1 then wouldn't it be better to look at the bag restrictions before the taking of females is encouraged (unless ofcourse the females are in plague proportions)

remember that the mating season lasts about 3 months and mating takes about a week. So probably the majority of females get looked after.

 Muddies first started

Tue, 2014-07-01 19:25

Muddies first started showing in the Moore in the early '80's I would think that it was the couple of active cyclone years we had in the late 70's that brought them down the coast. I and several other locals had been quietly targeting them for 15 years before Roennfeldt opened his trap and published it in the fishing report. And contrary to the above they certainly were breeding in there.

going back about 10-15 years

Tue, 2014-07-01 22:45

going back about 10-15 years ago we caught several muddies in the capel river below the weir , mainly in the summer , we stumbled on them when fishing for bream
I know of one other capel local who targeted them with good success down near the mouth ,

we believed they where breeding also , due to the differing sizes

I also caught one big muddy in the wonnerup inlet at the bridge near the mouth when chasing blueys , he was quite a big one , right under the bridge

I rang fisheries , who asked us to take one of his swimerettes in for DNA testing , information back from them that he was [his DNA matched ] from the north west of wa
they theorised eggs had been swept south on a strong Leeuwin current several years earlier , possibly over several seasons

haven't tried in the last few years, but who knows ? they may be able to adapt and breed this far south , evolution of a warming planet ?
