Sad yet unavoidable.

I wonder what knee jerk reaction the state government is going to have?. A total fishing and swimming ban year round with spotter choppers and drum lines in the river up to Guilford now?.

If they don't have drum lines out all ready I'd be asking why not.

 Note that a shark report

Mon, 2023-02-06 07:49

Note that a shark report went up on Dorsal yesterday (Sunday), based on an observation on Friday.

Shark spotted was a 2.5m bull at the old traffic bridge.

I am guessing that someone felt guilty that they saw something, didnt say something and someone ended up dead.

probs the final reason to be closing all metro waters to shark fishing

very sad for family

I had a good sighting of a 2. something  bull shark about 7 yrs ago on a nightdive at black wall reach

prodded it with my lil prawn net handle 3x , before it went out of torch/visibiity range, feeling very alone i aborted dive, made for a really shitty feeling returning to the exit point

discussed with some mates afterwards and was surprised no dogs or people has been harrassed

What I find sad

Thu, 2023-02-09 23:04

Is the protection of them . When you put human life over the buggers that’s sad .40 plus years going for dhues . Last 2 trips of year lost 2 cracker dhues to the buggers ( never happened ever). Not saying get rid of them but a cull wouldn’t hurt before we end up like north . That was one huge shark caught in river ( most would have seen) scary stuff

You said it LJ . A cull is in order. Way too many sharks out there all over the state. They have always been there but have got 10 times worse Since the government stopped the pro shark fishing.  Won't be long before you can't get anything past them or even ho in the water without being harassed.

Definitely sad news for the family.

I grew up fishing and swimming at canning Bridge and remember seeing quite a few back then

Had heard of guys catching smaller models further up, but that thing caught and release the other night was huge.

Think myself lucky with all the night diving in the river over the years, let alone jumping off blackies as a kid.

RIP young lady.

What a horror story. RIP young lass. My thoughts on it were similar to the fella that got bitten recently i.e. the shark wasn't seeking out the person but the person happened to be within a school of fish and a >2m bull shark will do a huge amount of damage with a single bite.

When the fella was attacked there were reports of baitfish breaking the surface in that area and he was swimming freestyle (splashing arms and legs) nearby/amounst it.

The latest report was that the young girl jumped in amoungst a pod of dolphin's. Again, when I've seen dolphin's in the Swan together they are usually rounding up fish and she could have inadvertently jumped right into the middle of a bait ball.

Very cold comfort and not in any way saying the victims contributed to the attacks and were just enjoying the river like thousands have safely done but there seems to be a correlation based on reports of the attacks. Tell you right now I'll be thinking more than twice about parking the boat up at the Rocky Point sandbank and swimming across the channel for a couple of cliff jumps.

Agree with you Frosty but as you said, cold comfort for the family. Perhaps there needs to be some public education around risks at certain times of year and to look on Dorsal and SLSWA site. I know that plenty of sharks don't get spotted but at least if you know one has been sighted you're aware.

A witness reckons it was a tiger not a bull. Had yellow stripes or spots apparently. I've never really known tiger sharks to be yellow but who knows?

Fishing for sambos ? ( good on him ) . Lady on clip “they say they swim off unharmed ,they only swim away and die” sharks are good mums “ no idea at all . Does she think the sharks give birth and look after them until they’re adults. Lol .

Reverse logic

Fri, 2023-02-10 23:24

Yep, with the current obtuse logic the obvious solution is to ban shark fishing and then all fishing in the Swan river.

It is genuinely amazing how completely wrong the response is to almost everything at the moment.

I am constantly astounded.
