for those in the know about stern drives

here it is , i drained the fluid out of the leg on the mercruiser today in the idea of trying to fix or at least find the cause of a grinding noise once i put it in gear. there didnt seem to be enough oil to start with and it was slightly milky as well. how much oil should there be in the leg ?. secondly there was a piece of metal about 1mm in diameter in the bottom of the leg that came out with the oil, my guess is there will be more , im thinking it is likely to be a cog of some description. how hard are the legs to pull apart , i do have a repair manual to help me out if i can understand it that is.Tongue out.. help me if you can, i need a salt water fix and it wont be till the tub is fixed

From memory i think the legs take just under 2L of oil. You removed the top and bottom drain screws. The leg needs to be removed and pressure tested to try and find the leak, and to check gimbal and uni's. There is a few special tools you will need to dissasemble gearbox, Probably not a job to take on unless you are 100% confident in what you are doing.

Hi , unfortunately the best you could hopefore is a buggered bearing ,but more than likley if a bearing has collapsed it will have possibly caused some gear damage .

Hope its not too much of a problem , like all things marine it wont be cheap Frown.
