The reality is over

All of you out there across the globe who have fought so hard to tackle the hideous enemy of our planet, namely carbon emissions, you know ...that god you worship of "Climate Change" or "Global Warming"? Well, it's necessary to inform you of some bad news. Very disappointing information.

Are you sitting down?

The current volcanic eruption going on in Iceland, since its first spewing of volcanic ash this past week, has NEGATED EVERY SINGLE EFFORT you've made in the past five years to control CO2 emissions on our planet.

I know, I know.... (group hug)...it's very disheartening to realize that all the carbon emission savings you accomplished while suffering the inconvenience and expense of: driving a Prius hybrid, buying fabric grocery bags, sitting up till midnight to finish your kid's "The Green Revolution" science project, throwing out all of your non-green cleaning supplies, using only two squares of toilet paper, putting a brick in your toilet tank reservoir, selling your SUV and speedboat, going on vacation to the local beach instead of Kakadu, nearly getting hit every day on your bike, replacing your $1 light bulbs with $10 light bulbs ...well, in 4 days, those savings have all gone down the tubes.

The volcanic ash emitted into the Earth's atmosphere in the past 4 days has totally erased every effort we've made in the past 5 years to reduce carbon.

I wish I had a silver lining, but the bush fire season across the western US will start in about two months, fires that will negate efforts to reduce carbon

in our world for the next two years.

But hey, grab a beer, phone Penny Wong, and have a nice day!

Comparison of CO2 emissions

Sun, 2010-05-16 21:19

Comparison of CO2 emissions from volcanoes vs. human activities.
Scientists have calculated that volcanoes emit between about 130-230 million tonnes (145-255 million tons) of CO2 into the atmosphere every year (Gerlach, 1991). This estimate includes both subaerial and submarine volcanoes, about in equal amounts. Emissions of CO2 by human activities, including fossil fuel burning, cement production, and gas flaring, amount to about 27 billion tonnes per year (30 billion tons) [ ( Marland, et al., 2006) - The reference gives the amount of released carbon (C), rather than CO2, through 2003.]. Human activities release more than 130 times the amount of CO2 emitted by volcanoes--the equivalent of more than 8,000 additional volcanoes like Kilauea (Kilauea emits about 3.3 million tonnes/year)! (Gerlach et. al., 2002)

Thank you for those

Sun, 2010-05-16 23:03

Thank you for those references Nealez.

This is old news, these claims were made and conclusively disproved weeks ago.

The majority of scientists back climate change and have demonstrated its occurence through peer reviewed research, but governments deny it. Could this be because its easier to put this issue in the "too hard" basket.

Where did you get your information Dale? Don't believe everything you read in the popular media/press!

Im no greeny, but i like an evidence based approach. Claims like those made regarding volcanic CO2 emissions by dale and others just piss me off. Back it up with research and facts if you want to be taken seriously.

Was actually sent to me in an email, I just took it as read since I'm not overly clever when it comes to this type of thing.

Cheers

I didnt mean to come across as a D*&k head mate, but the tone of this post really annoyed me. People trying to do the right thing and make possitive change in the world, then others try to shoot down their efforts with no good reason.

Wasn't referring to that part of it cuthbad, just Dale's justification for posting it the way he did.

Shoot first, ask questions later. Good comedy!

Well think about how much

Mon, 2010-05-17 07:11

Well think about how much worse it would be if people hadn't made the efforts to reduce emmissions.  It would be twice as bad.

To people that care about the environment - Good on them. It isn't easy to do it sometimes and it might cost a bit more sometimes but it is all worth it.  Your kids and their kids will appreciate it.

To those that don't care about the environment, as Darren Hinch would have said - shame on you!

there is a silver

Mon, 2010-05-17 13:08

there is a silver lining!

all those jets it grounded could not pollute the planet and thus saved more CO2 emissions...lol

but again we must remember that volcanic ash also blankets out sunlight and mostly Infra Red that heats the oceans and land!
Planetary science is not as simple as many would make it out to be, yes nature spews out millions tons of CO2 more than we could in one go, but what we do it exacerbate the issue by continually adding more and more and more to the bubble.
Climates swing from hot to cold over centuries and even millenniums without our help, but like a big pendulum on a clock, mess with it’s balance and it will soon swing out of kilter and time, AND that’s what humans are doing with climate change, we changing the speed and timing of many of these changes.

As long as we get Coral Trout & Barra in Perth, then bring it on…lol
