Time to buy a new one or can I repair?

My dillemma is that a new trailer will cost between $5k and $7k depending on who I go with (not something I can afford right now).

Parts from Martins will cost me a fraction of that but the work will be time consuming and I am not too mechanically minded.

Getting the boat off the trailer for an extended period will need stands or tyres (which another thread suggested) neither of which I have sitting at home. Its not a job you can do at the marina car park either while the boat is on the water.

So what is the consensus, is it stuffed beyond repair or can I get away with a wire brush and cold galv paint on the axles, a new set of hubs, brakes and springs and maybe some new rollers.

check out ace trailers

Tue, 2012-02-07 14:27

he will be able to build you one under 5 grand depending on what size your boat is! otherwise you could fix it up! just paint the axles a new set of brake pads ajust the brake lines new bearings and a bit of paint could get you a few more years! why new rollers?? they look ok?

Maybe the wife and kids can handle the job with the spanner. It's pretty easy really?

Hmmm that gives me an idea

Tue, 2012-02-07 14:36

Is Otto doing anything on Friday? He could have it sorted for me while you and I head out to the Fads for the day.

Err,,, yes I know its only a spanner and paint brush job, but with me I'll end up putting it all together and taking it all apart at least 7 times before I get it right. And I am dreading that inevitable frustration.

Done a few trailers in my time

Tue, 2012-02-07 15:17

looks like you may need a oxy set or heat on those nuts. If you clean it up, grind the rust away( horrible job and the longest) and paint with cold galv, it won't take long for the rust to show through the paint. Are the main beams still ok ? - hammer test it. Best bet would to try and find a good 2nd hand one that still has hot dip galv on it.  On the otherhand get a parts quote, maybe you could have a busy bee and get FW members to help for a day

good luck

It would depend on what is actually broken.

Tue, 2012-02-07 15:22

If you have under a 6m Alum boat and are pulling it with a 4wd and don't travel far to your boat ramp then I would be only worried about the bearings. If they are ok then I would just paint with rust convert paint and it should last a bit longer.

But unlimately it is knackered and needs to be rebuild or exchanged. Start saving as the above is really only prolonging the inevitable.

Nothing is actually broken

Tue, 2012-02-07 16:02

Its just the level of rust concerns me greatly and prevents me from doing any trips longer than the local boat ramp.

My excuse is that I have been doing too much of the filleting and not enough of the boat/trailer cleaning (deckies job).

Rust, like age, I guess is something you don't notice all that much until it creeps up on you and one day you wake up and look in the mirror and realise you look like your own grandfather.

As far as painting, have a look at these products on line:

KBS Coatings  ( kbs-coatingswa.com.au) or POR 15 (dearer)

They have a rust conversion system and primer coat in various colours that dry hammer tough.

We did a conversion on the axles on our tandem over winter and painted them in the silver.

Been in the water a few times and towed 1500klms. So far no stone chips and no rust.

A 1lt container will set you back sixty odd dollars but goes a long way.

They have a cleaner and rust converter to use before coating.

These are moisture curing coatings not like standard air dry stuff and like being brushed. Beware if you spray, make sure you wear a decent mask if you do.

Paint that cures with moisture will make a mess of your lungs. Make sure you wear gloves as the only way it comes off is when your skin does.

I have a paint shop and have done tests on it and you can actually belt it with a hammer, it is pretty impressive and no mucking around with two packs.

Cold galvanised primer are like most primers, they are porous and will soon rust thru.

As far as inside the box tube, AFTER painting a good dose of the good old fishoil sprayed in with a kero gun slows rust down.

Have known blokes to mix it with rust converters like Fertan but dunno about that one. Fish oil dries like a skin over the metal and can be easily reapplied yearly.

Hope this helps

Thanks for all the offers of assistance

Wed, 2012-02-08 08:57

 Really appreciate it.

I took Fishoron's advice after a lengthy chat last night and did the "hammer" test this morning.

Good news is I think it passed (ie just some flaky rust dropped off and no hole or serious indentation resulted from a few repeated whacks in the same spot. (I must place a rider on that as since I am an old man and a pen pusher my WHACK with a hammer is a bit less solid than a tradies love tap). Even so I think it passed all around.

The outside frame actually has zero rust on the bottom, just discolouration on the lower sides???? The cross members however are in a bad way all over, but again the love tap just produced flake removal and a slight indentation (more so from the flake removal than anything structural) so they are still pretty solid.

So the conclusion (pending someone with a bit more mechanical knowledge / experience in these things having a look at it) is that it is repairable (I think....).

Parts wise I think I can get the whole running gear changed over including 2 new axles for under $1000. (Thats hubs, springs, axles, brakes etc. Basically everything bar the frame, electrics, couplings and jockey wheel and rims.)

Now to pick a time to do all this....

Fishing fix comes first so if I can get out on Friday or the weekend then I won't feel so bad having the trailer in pieces for a week or so.

Got that one right Sherbs

Wed, 2012-02-08 11:02

No good spots left out  there. All the FW deckies I've taken out over the years have cleaned me out and your brother got the only other good one from that spot... oh and just to remind him he then spewed his guts up a millisecond after this pics was taken.

I'll give you a bell once I work out when and how it can all be done. Not sure how much work you and I would get done - we'd probably take one look scratch our heads and then retire to the bar for a few beers.
