IMO i would go with getting yourself a nice kayak setup if thats what you are targetting. Kayaks are good for many reasons one main reason being stealth and the other you can get into places that a tinnie cant. you can also launch your kayak basically anywhere also alot easier to transport car wise. with that kind of money you could mount yourself a nice sounder on the kayak and have it decked out to make your fishing easy going

maybe try both first?

for the river the Yak sounds the go, but id "feel" safer in a tinnie if a shark started hanging round offshore haha

Buy a Hobie

Sat, 2012-05-05 21:39

Mate I have got a hobie outback and it is awesome. There pedal powered and you can peddle miles without noticing it that much, so much more peaceful and rewarding catching a fish out of and there are heaps of blokes who go out into the Cockurn sound chasing pinkies.

I have the Hobie Revolution

Sat, 2012-05-05 21:57

I have the Hobie Revolution 13 with  Sailing Rudder and  Turbo Fin upgrades. Great for open water and  estuaries. The ergonomics and stability of  the Outback is better.

Tinnie wise if you want something specific for breaming and other estuary species a tinnie  with a  casting platform, shallow draft and  electric motor  installed   for  stealth work would be  the most ideal but  would cost more then  5k tho.I have a old and basic  tinnie as  well which  does its  job   fishing and crabbing in esturies.

There's no right or wrong answer. 5k will pay for a  fully decked out Hobie yak or a  basic dinghy.

thanks guys, a pinky from a yak would be pretty decent, deffinately agree with Colesy haha, and Venables I've had a good look at a couple hobies they're a decent rig, I would have to go with pedal power aswell due to the freedom of your hands, both the Outback and the Revolution look pretty mean. Busted Arse what motor do you have on your tinny ?

old school- tinny

Sun, 2012-05-06 07:22

$5000 will get u a nice 4.5m tinny with a 40hp on it if you keep an eye out over the winter months. That'll get to rotto no worries_ a yak won't.

alot more rewarding pulling

Sun, 2012-05-06 10:21

alot more rewarding pulling in a fish on the yak :) also another thing is you dont have the ongoing payment of fuel etc. i guess there is positives and negatives for both but IMO with 5 grand you could get a fully decked out yak rather then just a basic dinghy

hmmm a hard one i mean a yak

Sun, 2012-05-06 10:45

hmmm a hard one i mean a yak is very very good for chasing bream and flatties in the river u can get right up against the shore in snags right up into yacht clubs and with a pedal hobie make it out to inshore reefs easy but with a nice tinny u can use it for crabbing still get to alot of good bream spots and if u are going of shore bit more safe and easer haha another thing is a hobie is very good exercize and u dont even relize ur doing it but if u get a tinny u could bring a mate with you (if u want haha) i dont know very hard to chose one

Sun, 2012-05-06 14:42

Cheers guys the decision is killing me haha, good points for both tinnie and yakks :/ wouldn't mind taking a mate fishing everynow and then,, but the petrol would be the biggest downside to havin a tinnie at the moment for me.

Get Both

Sun, 2012-05-06 15:03

IMO $5000..is more than enough for a decent tinny and a yak...I picked up a 4.6m tinny with a 06 25hp yammy hasn't missed a beat for the last two years does the job in good cond...cost me $2600...it was a good buy off gumtree , most probably get my money back if i want to sell again...$2000 left for a yak best of both worlds ....$5000 for a yak seems over kill for me...good luck..also $25 full tank would last me all day

Tinny V Yak

Mon, 2012-05-07 10:09

ok so here it is you want to catch bream or flattys , snapper etc so ill put it plain and simple.

Get a Tinny as there is absolutly not much  benifit of a yak at all

1) the "stealth" aspects of a yak absolutly no benefit at all for bream infact quite the oppisite to be honest

2) the tinny will Always give you the advantage because a) you can stand up in it and sight cast to fish, b) install a cheap electric motor for $500 and there is your "stealth aspect" c) you gear will always stay dry and so will you.

3) with a yak you are fairly limited to the area you choose to fish as you cant move places overly fast , were as any angler will know sometimes the fish just are not there so you will have to move many kilometers to find the fish be it bream ,flattys snapper.

4) you get down the ramp and it takes you 15 mins to set up your yak were as the boat just rolls of the trailer, then when you get back in you have the 15 min again to derig and then when you put the yak on the car you get salt water all over the car .

5) when you get home to wash the yak you have to lay it all out and wash it down and then wash the car due to the salt on the roof where as with a boat just hose it down.

and before someone says you can go over shallower water with a yak , the shallowest water you will fish will be 60 cm roughly and the  bream boat i fish out of is 5.5m long and will kota over shallower than this all day long ...

The list goes on and i would have to say the only advantages of a yak is no rego and no servicing fees.

but for $5000 you can set your self up with ta siik bream / snapper boat that if you did decide that you enjoy fishing for bream etc you can enter comps with it and all sorts,

as an alternative though check out the finn spindrift range of boats , they are made of plastic only need a 3hp to move them about and they are awesome for the river / shallow water i have one myself fully kitted out that you are more than welcome to come check out if you like. and this only cost me $2500 to set up with motor , casting decks , electric , and box trailor to tow it.

**This is just my take on things and yes i have owned many kayaks and many boats and this is just what i have found over the 10+ years i have been fishing via watercraft***

Tinny

Mon, 2012-05-07 11:03

IMO , tinny, if you buy a yak and want to go fishing with someone they have to have a yak too, where as if you got a tinny you can take your mate too, you can set your tinny up awesome these days for a fairly decent price. So my opinion would be a tinny, safer.

i was in your position 3

Mon, 2012-05-07 11:16

i was in your position 3 months back
go the dinghy
Once youve fished the swan and canning system a little bit you will be keen
to fish othere southern systems, if you have a dinghy you can pack it up and tow it down with a mate and fish
I ended up getting a Finn Spindrift like brenz said
with a 4hp merc for $1000 me and a mate went halves
and he had a box trailer lieing around at home
Since buying it weve put in a casting deck and other bits and only spent about 120 dollars on it
I usually only do short 2 hours sessions and with this size motor we go through 2$ of petrol
It maxes out at about 8-10knots but we will upgrade the motor soon still easier than a kayak
Also the finn spindrifts only weight 50kg
so you can launch it like and that means anywhere

Cheers mate PM'd you

I never seen a spindrift til now also, looks like a sweet sorta halfway mark between the two. Although a question i have; say u were out in cock-burn sound in pleasant weather conditions, if it turned shit a bit quickly how would it handle a bit of swell/chop?

Rails; one of my good mates just bought a kayak so i've got somebody to go with, but I had though of that, nice to have someone to talk to when they're not biting. Addict-duffman i agree with you there, have plans to go down to the blackwood at some stage and visit kalbarri quite a bit, cheers for the PM as well :)

 Couldn’t agree more with

Mon, 2012-05-07 22:46

Couldn’t agree more with brenz, Have a track through some of my old dinghy reports to get an idea of what is possible in a dinghy. Don’t get me wrong, all the fish i have caught in my dinghy are possible in a Hobie but not with the same level of security and practicality. Fuel isn’t an issue, I can get around 20Nm out of 20L which in a 3.7m is a long way. It will take ALOT of time for you to suss out fishing in a small vessel for big fish but i think you will/can suss it out much quicker in a dinghy.

I spent around 3-4k all up setting up my rig and lots of hours but i love nothing more than heading out in her and possibly love it more than heading out in our 21fter. Here’s my reno to give you a few ideas and hopefully get you inspired. http://fishwrecked.com/forum/dinghy-and-running

Rick, i think i said in one of the comments but its just 10mm outdoor ply but we wrapped in glass which added pleanty of weight but makes its totally water proof.
