keen on taking my nephew fishing but not very well versed in spots around perth. not chasing anything big whiting and herring will do us for now. Any reccomndations as to where we should cast off? Was thinking city beach or maybe up freo way somewhere. Also whats the best bait to use. Ive only done river fishing for the last 5 years so im clueless when it comes to the beach fihsing. just want a nice couple of hours chucking some lines out and hopefully getting a fish or 2
cheers

Herring
Berley, berley, berley and they will turn up, Then you can use any bait, bit IMO slow winding in behind a float blob with berley in the hole is great. Then you need a leader from the blob to the hook off at least a meter, then a long shank or better still a wide gape hook.
Wogs the best (if you dont know its blow fly maggots) but even a lenght of green lummo tube will work, and my favourite is a Chrazy Charlie fly towed behind the blob.
Whiting - again almost anywhere. But dont cast over their heads, as they are very close in most of the time, and I mean within 5m of shore. Bait anything agaon, but always have a red bead threaded near or onto the hook. I attracts them and I didnt believe it until I tried it. Sandworm, bloodworms and even plastic work kill.
Hope this little info get you started.

thanks mate id heard bout the red attracting the whiting but was a bit skeptical... definatley give it a go though. Any spots you can recommend that isnt too treacherous for a young fella to walk ie rocks and stuff or is City Beach a good enough shout?

Sorry mate
Metro has never been my haunt. Prior to moving to Kcity 16yrs in Mandurah, and there any beach is good and safe for kids. Metro I would suspect any beach near structure such as reef etc. But then there is no stucture (much) at whitehills and you can still get plenty. Perhaps the city lads can help more, because this is what this site is about. Helping others, especially the newbies, and letting the fishing community thrieve, SO WE HAVE BETTER VOTING POWER. Go read this Gillard and Pew and Mewbigass.

ive found any of the beaches from cottesloe north where there is reef and then sand holes, you will do well on sundown for tarwhine, herring, and a good mixed bag of others. Get on google and have a sat view. I use peeled prawns for bait on a patnoster rig. just check ur fishing regs for sanctuaries, bag limit ect.
good luck
