TOWING BOAT INTO SHELTER BAY, STEEP POINT THOUGHTS???

Hi All, been a while...can anyone provide some accurate feedback on (towing a boat 4.5m Ally) into Shelter Bay near Hartog???  Ive heard conflicting stories good and bad.  Can anyone who has actually done this give me their opinion on doing it?  It is being towed by a High lift Hilux, and will be part of a crew of about 4 cars and 12 lads.  Any advice or stories from those who have done it would be greatly appreciated!!! The trip is planned for early August this year...

Cheers in advance!

I towed a box trailor through this year. Your trailor is gonna need to be In good condition and it would be worth taking some spare parts. I would take some air out of the tyres as soon as you leave the bituman to cushion your boat a bit more. The soft hilly section you should let your tyres right down for cos you don't want to get stuck there give it plenty of gas through this section and you should be right. Keep 2 vehicles in front of you and 1 behind in case you need to do a double snatch.
Good luck

I towed a 4.2m tinny there a

I towed a 4.2m tinny there a couple of years ago and vowed never to do it again.  The track was so dry and cut up, it was a struggle getting a fully loaded Cruiser there let alone a boat behind.  Even with tyre pressure down as low as I could go, I had to hit some of the bigger hills with speed, and the as a result the boat just got bounced and hammered.

On the was back out, we cracked some welds on the ally around the transom, we lost the right hand guard which we had to wire and cable tie back on every half hour and the trip back to Overlanded took about 7 hours.

I was nice to have the boat there though, but I would seriously question how much damage you want to do to your boat and more your trailer.

Just take it easy

We have taken a few boats in through there.

The last one was towed by friend, Barcrusher 5.5 centre consol. He just took it easy going in, let the tyres down to smooth the ride out a bit on the hard stuff and for the soft stuff and had a bit of extra weight in it, but not overloaded.. The hardest bit was the first hill, towing a boat that size.

You could always drop the boat in the water near the salt lakes at the first hill that takes you in to steep (you know the spot where everyone lets their tyres down before going in?). I think you can still get the boat in there, may pay to google earth it. Have someone drive the boat around and then the trailer gets towed in.

If you do it that way, just make sure you strap all the rollers and moving parts of the trailer nice and tight so they dont get thrown around and damaged and let the tyres right down.

enjoy, makes me want to go for a trip down there now, thinking about it.........

Dropping your boat in at the sand dunes wont help. Its a salt lake and you ant get through the seawall !

Too easy

Hey mate I went to steep in November last year and towed a 4.75m trailcraft runabout in with a 79 series landcruiser that was loaded up to the brim and had no problems. Just make sure ur trailer is in good nick and the boat us tied down tight on the trailer, let the Tyres down as low as safely possible and other than the 1 big boggy hill there should be no issues. Just make sure anything that looks a bit dodgy on the trailer gets replaced and take spares if possible e.g wheel bearings, springs, rollers ect. Don't stress too much, you should be fine if you go in prepared. Good luck.

A 4.5m ally is no problem at

A 4.5m ally is no problem at all to tow in. I went in with a 6m glass boat / Etec 130 in July, out in October, and it was no problem with the hills or soft stuff at all. We were extremely heavily loaded - probably seven tonnes minimum all up - and if you know the tug, I would expect your Hilux would have more power. Just let the tyres down early, vehicle and trailer, and like Rig said take some parts. We broke a tie-down strap on the way in (could have been any reason) but had two more doing the job as well, and broke a spring on the way out, but that was no suprise at all as the trailer was well overloaded, and crappy to begin with. The camper trailer I've towed in twice since has much better suspension, weighs nearly as much and has been no problem at all. If your trailer is good I would not expect you to have an ounce of trouble.

Could pay to give Paul a call

Could pay to give Paul a call and see how many people have been on the track before heading in.....? Sometimes the track can be great and smooth ride in sometimes it can be a little rough. I don't think you will have to much of a problem though. We have towed in a few times when the track has been quite bad. Good luck with the trip! Great spot!

Spare parts

Mon, 2011-03-14 01:26

I towed a box trailer i rebuilt into steep last Oct. The track was good then and i checked with Paul

before i left about conditions.

I took a few spare parts in case of breakdowns mostly due to corigation on the track.

1. Wheel hub pre packed with bearings and grease.

2. 2 X U bolts for the axle.

3. Spare coupling.

4. Assortment of nuts and bolts.

On the way out when we stopped to pump the tyres 2 of the bolts to the hitch coupling had rattled lose.

The bolts were wrecked but i replaced them from the spare coupling and was done in 5 min.

Sure was glad i packed a few extra items or it would have been a long turn around for a couple of bolts.
