Smoke packet is just an indicator of the size of Gardies, so please don't take up this bad habit. Gardies were caught locally in Bunbury for our Warroora trip that is happening shortly. (May 2011)
hey Ive never trolled baits is the done thing to go really slow like 2 knots and does anyone troll baits for mackies? I know you have to do speacial sowing stuff with them to hey?
no sewing needed Rob .. usually most crew troll them with a small skirt in front and a special bait spring around the nose with the beak removed . even without the skirt a skipping gar can work a treat on sails and macks .. i tried it at exmouth last year looking for marlin but didnt get a touch :S
simple rig , push a size 10 0 up thru the under side so that the mono goes thru the eye of the hook up in the head of the gardie loop it around, crimp and push squid skirt over broken off beak,100lb mono, make sure mono goes thru eye of hook!!!!!sailys etc love them
we used to run beakie bibs on our gardies when trolling for sails off karratha n hedland. everyone rigs them differently
we ran 150pnd mono thru to a large saltwater fly hook or a circle (prefence for the release factor) we had a small plastic squid running along the mono and added the beakie bib. in under the gills with the hook - keeping as close to center of the bait as possible and then out the bum or similar depending on length of bait. we also used to "pop" the flesh off the backbone. using your fingers you can squeeze the sides slowly , dont crush it! and you will feel the flesh pop off the bone somewat - the bloke i fished with said it gave the bait abit more freedom to swim.
