Trout report - North Island NZ.
All,
well i had a pretty epic weekend just gone on the trout
day 1: undisclosed location , for all that you know the most i will say its in the king country.
Headed to my favourite patch of water in a paticular area solo and in pooring rain.....i roughly walk a stretch of 4 kms over a day fishing and proceeded to land 9 rainbows and 3 browns to 6 pound. All on nymph. it seems each pool is starting to stock up with fish for spawning season on this paticualy system. with one pool highlighting 7 fish from it.
Day 2 again undisclosed location and i wont even give a hint.
This is my favourite stretch of water and if i fish the main system it where i got my 2 trohpies 2 years ago (mind you on the same day)....i decided to check out a spawning stream running into this system from higher up in the mountains. As this systems closes for 3 months for that paticualr reason.
and unfortantely mother nature played its part today with some awsome experieinces albiet only 4 fish landed.... here we go. fish generally wont get smaller then 7 pound in this area and its a very very secret area. and while heading up stream i had ladned a couple 7 pound fish in very poor condition due to breeding then all of a sudden standing at the back fo this pool, these 2 MONSTER BROWNS (im talking 12 +) just cruised up, one actuelly went so close to my legs (so much for senting) i could of stepped on it. i watched them cruise deep into a pool and started throwing numerious flys at them nothing.....then they both moove up into about 7 inches water doing there thing...they did not want a bar of any fly till i foul hooked one, and it took me straight to a log. concentrations levels were at a all time low. Then on the same stretch of water a 10+ pound rainbow comes out and just chills there, like its feeding but it wasnt. again i threw numerous nymphs on these guys and nothing. ended up getting a different brown of about 7 pound.
i mooved up the stretch the same sets of shallows less then 7 inches deeps to come across another breeding pair of browns. One would of gone about 8 and the other 11. at one stage the fins of the larger male were out of the water as it did its thing on the eggs.....again throwing numerous nymphs to try and piss it off enough that it would take one and nothing. 10 mins later standing in that same positions the pair deceided to start mooving towards me, and litrally within seconds i had the female , one US size 12 boot away from and the male another....i was gobsmacked i could of picked the girl up by the tail! then all of a sudden one of the browns from the lower stretch of the shallow decided to pop on up get in between the pair and they started "argueing".......in the end the 12+ pround grabbed the other male by the tail and took him down stream to leave the girl up there by her self. at this stage she was so spooked by what had just happened she darted off under some grass....when the large brown did this his entire head plus the tail end of the other brown was hanging out of the water like he just got some pray for roguhly 5-7 m down into the deeper sections. i was gobsmacked as to what i had just seen, for all this time i thought they were eels doing it to the trout where in fact its trout doing it to trout. If any of you have dealt with spawning season here you pull some pretty poorly condtioned trout from all this spawning!!
over the day we couned 5 trohpies and numerous 8-10 pound fish. but today it was for me and mother nature had them doing what they do best and put on a pretty amazing show. Mind you this river never gets any more wider then 3-4 m wide and involves an hour of quad biking and a further hour of hiking down gorges to get there..
