An Unusual Catch on a Jig
Submitted by Grooveepants on Fri, 2013-06-07 07:35
My mate caught this on a small dermersal jig South side of Rotto last week. We were hoping it was a very, very large Dhui. You can imagine our surprise and dissapointment when this thing came to the surface. Still a pretty impressive thing to catch whilst jigging for demersals though. Shark was released...

Crocodile
Not a bad wobby even if caught on bait considering they usually dive straight in to a hole when hooked.
Have the nick name of crocodile because as soon as you gaff them they do the crocodile roll and either pull the gaff point out or the gaff out of your hands.

Yep, he did the roll...
... have the whole thing on video as I have GoPros mounted at the front and back of the boat. Will grab some screen shots and post them up, he burnt the crap out of my hands before we got the gloves on.

Teenager
The wobby is just a teenager, have seen them up to 3.5 metres and unlike fish and most sharks, the bigger they are the better eating they are.

Yeh that's the one
The boat is everything and more I could ask for from a CC.
Goes like a bullet, handles the chop fantastically and is a very, very dry ride.
And with the dollar the way it's heading, we bought it at just the right time!
Have a couple of more things to add to it and it will be sweeeet.
I'm looking forward to getting it up to Exmouth next year for one of the comps.

I remember when I was a kid
I remember when I was a kid we would go to Jurien bay and every day I would watch the cray boats come in. One day this boat came in and I thought they had two big rolls of carpet on the deck until I looked closer and realised they were Wobby's. Freakin huge! That is a good one and I would have kept it as John says they are magnificent eating.

haha that would have had to
haha that would have had to have been the king of all dhuies if it had been!
Personally I reckon you did the right thing by releasing it. I kept one slightly smaller than that a few weeks back and was a dog of a thing to fillet and hard on the knives.
50% bigger than that one and I'd have another go I reckon.
When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:
n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or
n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.

Trick
The trick to keeping your knives sharp while filleting sharks is to cut from the inside out. Make a small incision then turn your knife over so that the point is under the skin and push it along so that you are not trying to saw your way through the sandpaper like top side

Yeah I've got my shark
Yeah I've got my shark filleting down pat now John. I cut along the cartelage and then cut fillets off the skin, piece of piss.

Split it
Split it right down the middle, remove spine, cut flaps off then lay flat with skin down on a flat surface, using a sharp knife , long enough to cover the width of the slab, hold on to the skin while you cut along it with the knife held flat against it. The whole slab of meat should come away leaving you with bugger all left on the skin.

Yeah I did a search on FW
Yeah I did a search on FW before I started for pointers and saw a few people suggest that. Still wasn't a quick process though!
I guess the first time you fillet any species takes you longer to get the hang of it.
Still havent tried any of it yet, might have to defrost some this weekend unless I catch something tastier tomorrow :-)

Time
A wobby that size I would expect it to take me about 15 minutes to have it in to serve size fillets ready for packing

there is no way I would be
there is no way I would be letting my feet get any where near those things . they can turn on themselves in an instant. Many many stories about these critters, and they don't let go.

tail biters!
caught one out preston point once. straight after landing it we took its fins off and tail then spiked it. after 15min or so we packed up and were in the carpark, my mate picked it up by the trunk and it swung around and tagged me on me ankle, was only a nick but they are tough buggers. We then immediatly beheaded it. And yes they are very fine eating
nice catch

Feet
That was my first thought too!
Had them latch onto things in the boat before, would hate to have one attached to my foot!
Cheers,
Joe

Must have donked him on the
Must have donked him on the head with the jig n pissed him off. Wicked catch.
Remembered that years ago while on a camping trip at wedge island, the blokes on the camp site next to us caught a huge one in one of their cray pots. Cooked it up and gave us some, I remembered it tasted bloody good. I guess anything that feed on crayfish is gonna be decent on the plate.
