Hi all, just wondering for those that live near Freo if the aircraft carrier is in port or anchored out to sea?
Might go and have a look.
Cheers

approach the ship at full throttle with a towel around your head ......30 years ago when I was a youngen the yanks used to take people out to the ships to have a squizz

They won't come in
When I was in the Navy some thirty years ago, I was informed that since Pearl Harbour 1941, no American Naval ship will enter a port that it can't leave under its own steam and steerage. We came in on our HMAS Melbourne (aircraft carrier) in 1981 to Fremantle Harbour while the USS Nimitz which we were doing exercises with stayed out in Gages Road. Admittedly, she was a hell of a lot bigger than our Melbourne, that's for sure!!!

USS Constellation back in 1985
I was lucky back in 1985. My family got to hop on the old Rotto ferry Temaraire 2 and taken to the Constellation (CV64). Shit that thing was huge.
We had a Marine take us on an escorted tour of the ship. Got up under the F14 tomcats. My brother managed to trip himself on one of the arrester wires. I dont know how he didnt see it... the bloody cable from memory was about 4 inches wide.
Wouldnt happen these days. Also remember the young ladies lining up in Freo at the ferry terminal trying to get a lift onto the ship as a "guest".
Irrespective of what your views on war and war machines they are awesome pieces of equipment.
I did then the best that I knew how. When I knew better, I did better.

As I said they wouldn't allow
As I said they wouldn't allow it in anyway as it's nuclear powered. There was a reasonable sized conventional powered US fleet berthed at Freo about 8 yrs ago Helo carrier and a couple of destroyers from memory.

Navy
I used to do part time driving for us navy over many years was given the ships flag after it came back from iraq on the first invasion still have it folded in the triangle spent many hours on board so if you get the chance to do it go for it the best way to get on board is befriend any of the sailors you see they are able to take guests onboard or dial a sailor and invite them to your home for dinner

We're both right
Greatrex,
If you read my report properly I said, If they can't leave under their own steam in other words without help, they will berth offshore. If they are now doing that, then they must have relaxed that rule. I don't think so though because America would not want to be embarrassed as they were in 1941 again.

Looked a big ship when we were passing it 30000ft above on Thursday just after noon heading back home, the pilot came over the radio to tell us all it was there, but I was already looking at it through my window.
Cheers
