I bought PE1 Varivas EGI 8 strand braid and it kept snapping resulting in about $120 worth of lost lures before I finally bit the bullet and replaced it.

 I haven't used the EGI

I haven't used the EGI stuff, but have used a number of their other models over the course of around 10 years and have always found them to be excellent.

The Avani range has for a long time been the benchmark for GT fishing, although it isn't cheap. I have a spool of the PE6 Avani that's on my doggie jigging reel that's still going strong after a few years of trips.

When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:

n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or

n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.

.....+1. Been the ducks nuts on both my PE3 and microjigger. Can't comment on castability, other than a few short flicks for salmon at Mewstone!
