Walpole

Hey all,

we will be heading to Nornalup Inlet in the Chrissie Holidays somettime. and i would like to know what is *inside* the inlet.

i will mainly be L/B from Coal Mine Beach Road area and will have access to a kayak.

is it worth taking the big rods? what i had in mind was have 2 big rods set up around night time and relax or is that wasting time knwoing that nothing is there? are there stingrays or sharks? i hear there are lots of bream, king george and herring so maybe even a mulloway?

also where is better for breaming? Rest Point area or Coal Mine Beach are?

Cheers,

Eric

Welllllll... inside the inlet there are definately stingrays and some big shovel nose sharks. You'd be in with a chance if you have your big rods set up but coal mine beach itself is fairly shallow, prob more worth trying up the eastern end where the boat ramp/car park is. Been many years since I've been down there tho, back when I grew up there the jetty still exsisted off the end and was a good place to wet a line, all gone now tho. But definately seen rays and shovel noses there. As for mullas, have heard of them in the frankland but dunno if theres much chance from coalmine.

Coalmine or Rest point sides are both good for bream/kg's, head around the knoll theres plenty of spots to have a fish. Any chance you'd be able to go for a 4wd with someone while you're down, that'd give you plenty of great options for some decant fish!

Lots and lots and lots of rays! Have caught the standard black and eagle rays and even some shovelnose there. Heard of some decent sharks in the inlets mostly school sized bronzies but some nice gummies as well! Def be worth hanging a livie out the back of a boat or a fillet floated up off the bottom.

Hi mate, I'll be staying at Coalmine over chrissie myself. Only have a tinnie, but you're welcome out. I fish there a LOT at this time of the year. Tailor, flathead, whiting, bream, pink snapper, skippy, herring, giant herring all make it a great time of the year to be there. I usually fish it lure only and still get a heap of fish. I'm planning on going a lot more fly this year, just to see how it goes. You'll love it.

I'd be

very careful 'chumming' during the xmas holidays down there. It'll be very busy and i think you may upset a few people doin that.

Otherwise i don't think it would even be necessary with the numbers of rays in that system. Some in there are over 2.5m wide. Good luck stopping one of them

Tackle

Eric,

There is a reasonable tackle selection in the IGA at town and I believe the coalmine beach caravan park office carries a small selection.  You probably wont find many lures or specialised tackle.  Im pretty sure both sell bait, but the IGA definately does.

Its a magic place, I am heading down tomorrow for the week also.

I havent run into any

Sun, 2010-12-26 09:43

Down there before, but havent been chasing them either.  I just love being able to fish in the boat or from shore and being able to get bream, flatties, kgw, herring, small pinkies all from the same spot.

Last year at coalmine beach at night right behind the caravan park in nov my mates had a cracker session, I would be very surprised if you couldnt get plenty of rays from that beach.

We have been out on the houseboats down there and had them swimming around under the boat in 2-3 ft of water and there are some massive rays out there.

nornalup

Gday,

Fish out of nornalup a month or so ago and can report that the river itself is FULL of bream. Mostly caught just legals but you couldnt really miss. Tried, squidgies, rmg scorpions and prawnstars but found that using a prawn on a kahle hook was by far the best. Another crew was fishing the estury and they swore by the 2 inch watermelon gulps. No blowies tho. not a common sight when you fish down south. Saw an eagleray bout 5kays down the river aswell so there must be a few of the around.
