Yep, tend to agree, not really too phased though. Getting a majority to be happy with what it changes to will be rather difficult.

Your right Adam, you could probably build the Fiona Stanley hospital with the money put in the bureaucracy to get a new one.
Really, is a change of flag going to change anything from what it is now apart from a few feel somewhat somehow different?
For some stupid reason every time a country disassociates itself from the Jack it ends up in turmoil. Not that I can see it happening in Australia too much, but there tends to be a lot of in-fighting amongst minorities afterwwards and the country goes to crap. Maybe the poms are good administrators?
Australia is independent to the monarch now any rate.
America is a republic, I certainly don't want to become America. It has a dog of a republic political system which is reflected with the country's current state of affairs. America has a crap medical system, legal system, insurance and education system.
Its sent their country broke.
As a 5th generation both sides with several different nationalities I don't really have any sort of affliction with the monarchy. Its not that I dislike them, I just dont have any interest.
The one thing that I don't like is the underwriters of insurance of this country are from the US and the UK which are driving the changes in law. The costs associated with these laws and insurance have sucked the financial life out of both their countries.
Some of those laws are also affecting freedoms.
If our culture is tied with the jack then keep it. Its that culture that has made Australia what it is. Any attempt to water it down could change it for the worse.
The great thing about this country, is the freedom of speech.
Does anyone know how the current Australian flag came about?
Happy Australia day.

Crap flags a flag,if we do change the flag maybe a carton of piss would look good as this is where the youth of australia is going any excuse to get pissed and fight and kill .Gone are the days of the happy go lucky aussie in his thongs telling a good yarn.In are the shitheads with their knives and baseball bats having fun bashing someone for a dollar or just for fun, australia is a great and beautiful country, which is slowly on the down hill slide.Happy australia day.

And I agree with you m8.I am not for or against the Poms or the royal family ,apart from the odd visit the royals leave us, and the people of the United Kingdom alone and politicians run, or is it ruin ,the country .And that to me is why I can never vote for us to become a republic,I simply could not nor have the confidence in this or any other ,self serving,Many, left wing socialists,to write up a Constitution, We are a very rich nation in natural resources, with a relativly small population, and our kids should have the very best education, our hospitals should have the very latest and best equipment and our retired Aussies should be able to LIVE,not exist as many do now on the aged pension .Im sick of the way Australians are treated ,in the name of international diplomacy, what happened to the days when Aussies were able to call a spade a spade, I would not trust a polly from any party to clean up after my dog.If any of you think I have little or no respect for this country's leaders,You are right I don't. change our flag,ok,but leave our constitution alone,The Americans have a brilliant bill of rights and constitution but look at the greed and corruption their.Look at many of the other Republics in the world, former Colonial countries, many are run by despots and thugs. The Canadians may have got it right, but, the French Canadians demand bi-lingual everything, they also wanted to break away from the English speaking parts. No,for my money ,leave Australia as it is,Proud, and almost free.My thoughts for the day,I will now go have a beer, listen to some good Aussie music and have a BBQ with some mates, all Aussies, but some through Naturalisation. jersey

Things are going OK as we are.
I am a naturalised Aussie having been here for some 44 years and getting here on a 10 quid voucher (well Mum and Dad did, I was free). I have become very proud of what we have here and the current flag is something I have become very comfortable with and proudly salute it at every chance I get.
Australia is seen as a very important party to the Commonwealth and I think personally, that works both ways, particularly in troubled times. Frankly I would shudder at the thought of someone having more power than the current democratically elected PM.
I can see now the row and ruckus that would be created to come up with a new flag. In today's politically correct society all I can see (and I am not being racist here in any way) is a flag bearing the colours of and a strong resemlance to the Aboriginal flag.
Leave things alone IMO. Happy Australia Day everyone!

not fazed
Im not fazed one way or the other. I just hate seeing drunken yobos wearing the flag for a cape while shouting racist slogans, and beating on people who are ethnically different from the white anglos.
Australians have never needed to wave the flag to feel national pride. We have historically taken the p!ss from the yanks who are very much tied up in this sort of thing. But in times of uncertainty we rush to these national symbols. It started when Pauline Hanson draped herself in the flag for the one nation electoral campaign.
If you want to change something, change the national anthem. Advance Australia Fair is about as inspiring as cold toast.

The diggers all fought
under the flag we have today and that is good enough reason to leave it alone for me.If we become a republic later then address it then.
So tell me have you got your info from years on the water or hours on the internet?

aussie flag
Saltatrix, The design was chosen by an international competition after Federation in 1901. It's made up of the Union Jack , the Federation Star, and the southern cross. The Federation Star has seven points representing the States and Territories.
Probably unknown to most, the Australian flag was red up until 1950 when Prime Minister Menzies decreed the blue flag as Australia's national flag.

Hi Ya,
Despite the apparent love of Bob Menzies as a 'national hero' (I'm talking history here, not Forum members), if you read history you'll quickly find Menzies was really interested in was getting himself a seat in the House of Lords in the British Parliament. For some stupid reason Menzies thought he qualified. Because of that he spent inordinately long periods of time in London when he should have been here in Australia. Wasn't until he was deposed that Australia really got a national identity and that came about because Curtin told Churchill to bugger off, he was bringing our troops home to defend Austalia and Britain could deal with that the best they could. Churchill is known to have stated that Australia was expendable in the effort to save Britain.
While I am no Labor supporter, Curtin was the best thing that could have happened to Australia at the time.
Cheers.

I'm in favour but I'm pretty hard to please so I don't know what is a good alternative. If it was up to me I'd keep the current flag but remove the union jack and replace it with a picture of a box of James Boag's Premium beer. Now wouldn't that be something.
****I'm accepting no responsibility for my views there as it's currently being powered by the said box of beer, really and truly cold it is too****
Long live James Boag.

nothing wrong with what we got . imo. a lot of us were borne and bred under this flag ,why change it. plus just think of all the money that it would cost the tax payers to change it, let alone the referendum and countless thousands they would be paying out for some nob to design a new one

dont think the general
dont think the general public should choose whether to keep the current flag or not.
all defence force personnel should choose. Those are the people who have fought for that flag, and many in the past have died.
Personally dont think it should be changed for this reason alone, there is too much history with our current one to give up.

We already have our own flag !! A blue one with stars and a Union flag in the corner.
Every bloody year at this time we get the usual suspects baging on about Flag, Republic, Invasion Day and a heap of other general whinges about how bad a place Australia is and and how bad Australian's are.
Frankly it gives me the sh*ts.

All of the above, lets keep our flag, but I like Dales idea, But one thing with James Boag,I believed in what the adverts said,so I drank it,I poured some on my head,I still haven't grown any hair?I also like Cammos Idea, after all ,WA has all the wealth,we grow enough food,I reckon we're starting to get too many people, and we have the two best footy teams in the AFL,plus all the other good players in the other teams are mostly from WA We could have a flag with a corner for the Eagles and dockers,A Dump truck and Loader,A bottle of WA wine,a clock with the average sunshine we get in WA and mounted in the middle,a West Australian Jewfish, jersey

If its got to change
This is one of the proposed flags, looks pretty rubbish to me. (aesthetically, everything else aside)
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/1/15/Flag_of_Australia_with_Aboriginal_flag_replacing_Union_flag.svg
ALthough something similar to the aborigional flag would be alright, with a design that represents the australian lanscape rather than beers and BBQ's. Could you imagine the olympic team marching along holding a flag made from the front of a jackeroo BBQ box?
But really, does it need to change?

could never be legally done,
could never be legally done, as the aboriginal flag is a copyrighted and privately rights owned entity.
Every one flying it, using it and even printing pictures of it should by law have the written permission of the copy right holder.
www.copyright.org.au/pdf/acc/articles_pdf/A97n07.pdf
http://www.naidoc.org.au/NAIDOC-about/australianAboriginalFlag.aspx
So any new flag inserts would need to be free of copy rights and private ownership or the battle of it's use would continue,
The good old alternative would be the Eureka Flag, but that has so been unionized in the labor vs boss battles, it can never represent all.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Federation_Flag
this is a good read on what has transpired over 180 years of trying to change the flag... this first attempt was in the 1830's and since then the war has been on about the flag...

The Flag
Very funny watching Australia day on the foreshore up here in Geraldton. Aboriginal people with the aussie flag, clothes, tats, bathers. Found very strange as the flag is supposed to represent everything that is evil about the White man.
Wish I had taken some pics

thanks for feed back..
Fellow Australian/fishermen,
seems views are mixed on whether the flag as we know it still has the true representation of who we are as Australians.
At what point can we give up our training wheels and start to cycle on our own? This question is asked on ra egular basis to our country's leaders with much debate.
People say we should not part with the flag in repsect for our current and fallen soldiers, I believe our soldiers fought and are currently fighting for us, our families, there families, our land and our freedom........ A country's flag is a representation, an identity of who we are as a people.
We're not second class poms or yankie side kicks, we're Australians!!
I believe our country is strong, we can stand on our two feet, the union jack I believe is what we were 100 years ago maybe but not now.
I love my country and my countrymen but
I BELIEVE WE MUST HAVE A FLAG OF OUR OWN!!!

The Bulletin
The Bulletin said in 1901 about the competition winning flag (our current one)
"a staled rehash of the British flag, with no artistic virtue, no national significance... Minds move slowly: and Australia is still Britain's little boy. What more natural than that he should accept his father's cut-down garments, - lacking the power to protest, and only dimly realising his will. That bastard flag is a true symbol of the bastard state of Australian opinion."
That's 109 years of exactly the same argument!

Hi Ya,Ya post shows you
Hi Ya,
Ya post shows you are an empty head.
In fact, & it can be proved, my direct ancesters on my grandmother's side were original pioneering settlers in Swan Colony. When they arrived at Swan Colony, tents were the only form of accommodation. They were also part of the group that opened up the Wyalkatchem (spelling?) area. On my my grandfather's side they were very early settlers in South Australia.
Now I know what your grizzle - problem - is. Your main form of exercise is jumping to conclusions. A useless and fruitless exercise if ever there was one.
Never know an individual to be so wrong so pull your head out of your bumb the air is fresher.
As for your "hollier than thou" statement about 'OUR COUNTRY' and that "I'm sure you love living in this country......." well I do and my ancesters have done so for 6 generations.
So P!SS off - PR!CK ya condescending fart and WE DO HAVE OUR OWN FLAG!!!
Cheers.
PS - AND NO I am not a royalist. I simply don't care if the queen is our figure head or not. But I can see no reason why the flag should be change simply because many new additions to the country want to change it. If they don't like the flag, let them go somewhere that has a flag they do like.

Ody does that mean we can't
Ody does that mean we can't hang the Royalists any more from the Swan River bridges,,???? buggaa,
ps a flag represents your heritage and where you derive from, like your family coat of arms...
So this lands should show it's original colony heritage, as for the original land dwellers, before settlers, they have a flag, it's a commercial copyrighted flag under one individual persons control, ask Google what happened when they tried to use it!
So as long as you part of the commonwealth of nations and bow your knee to the queen, then you going to have the old union jack up there. Once you serve the cord from mother England for good and become a republic, then you can talk about new flags, anthems, coats of arms.... etc and waste billions of dollars changing letter heads, flags, passports, music sheets, uniforms of soldiers, etc...
Hell I saw what a balls-up it was when south africa changed government in 1994 and the ANC changed basically everything they could. Cost that country hundreds of millions.
just as a quick idea ( my father-in-law was in the government serves and told me about this) the reprinting of letter heads and envelopes for government offices was over $50m alone spent once art work, contracts etc was done...what a waste!

my parents were immigrants
my parents were immigrants from Poland and Germany after the war and i was born here. I see the flag only as a tool to express our pride and love of this country and truly identify who we are and where we came from.
Changing the flag is probably the least important issue facing our society......reading through some of the posts here most would agree that social and moral issues far outway this discussion?
Our current flag is significant in its own right...why change it?

yep leave it as it is.
Many generations have died for it & thats enough for me.yep a 10pound immigrant from UK in 71 but I dont give a stuff about the royalty ( since Diana) or anything British including their cricket, or tennis players. When I look at our flag I see the Southern Cross & all that it represents. The jack in the corner is just a harmless reminder of the past!-
But the national anthem. ZZZzzzzz! I would prefer "We are one but we are many" over Australia fair!
