I stumbled across them by
They are straight off Hillarys. I stumbled across them by chance (sounded a HEAP of sambos mid water when running between spots) and on checking the co-ords with another member, confirmed they were indeed the fabled containers.....
Pointless going there. Massive amounts of BIG sambos, even more BIGGER sharks.
I wont give you the co-ords mainly to save the lives of the hapless Sambos that you will no doubt hook immediately and 5 seconds later loose to sharks...I have already killed 2 too many there before I gave up.
Sorry

Hereabouts
....they are about 23nm more or less west of Ocean Reef marina in 115m.
I used to fish there 15 years ago, up until around 5 years ago. In the early days it was a lot of fun. Mostly Samsonfish, but also horse Skippy (up to 6kg), Mulloway and the occasional demersal....mostly Breaksea Cod. There were Sharks, but only occasionally. Probably 10 years ago the Charter operators starting hitting them with jigging charters. Not blaming them whatsoever, but its around then the Sharks got wise and figured out there were easy meals to be had. As John says, the Sharks are now so bad you'll be lucky to land a fish.
These are not small Sharks either....mostly Bronzies in the 10-12 foot range. I have had many of them to the boat. Got a Thresher (or at least it looked like it) there once, and I've seen bigger Sharks below the surface....not Bronzies, and big.
I won't go there now...it's a waste of time, jigs and fuel.
...and I was the "member" that confirmed the coordinates with JohnF, and agree there is no value to anyone or any fish in further disemminating the spot.
Cheers

thanks Belly Fish, its very interesting. as I said, I have no plans to go there. Do you know how they came to be there, was it by accident, so ship tried to sink itself ??
BUT, horse Skippy, to 6kg, I would love to find them, one of my favourite eating fish & catching them that big would be a blast of a time

Fell off a ship
Might be an urban myth, but I heard they fell off a ship in rough weather

I thought “ Containers “ was
I thought “ Containers “ was just a general term for the dumping ground of old scuttled ships ... anybody have any sounder shots ? .. just intrigued as to what the area looks like ...

They do fall off, but you
They do fall off, but you dont hear much about it
20 years ago while driving around the SW, we found one washed up near Cape Naturalist, seemed to be loaded with tobacco.
South of the Abrolhos when working as a cray decky we found about 2 football fields size area of those aerated concrete blocks floating level on the surface
Before that it was olive oil, thousands of tins washing up on the islands-its reputed that the dings were using it in their steering, hydraulics etc on the little crayboats :-)
In NZ there was an investigation into lost sea containers and other reasons, due to the constant numbers of NZ racing yacths that were lost without trace while crossing the Tasman,Pacific-yatchs with the highest level of safety/coms gear.

In general, the wrecks at the back of Rotto are called "the graveyard" or "the barges", although the barges are really 3 or 4 individual wrecks, a few of which were actually barges before being scuttled.
The "containers" are apparently a bunch of old containers that fell off a ship as Rob has indicated off Hillarys/Ocean Reef, and are apparently completely flattened (not much of a bump on the sounder) but give off a good signal to sambos.
Almost all are full of sharks now.......

Sounder shots
I don't have any, but there is only a slight show on the sounder of perhaps 1-2 metres
