What do you lot do to earn a crust??? - 2010

Hi Crew,

Just saw the users post and the topic of what everyone does for a living came up and as noted, many of us have changed jobs and there are a heap of new members.

I'll start it off:

I used to work for DoF as a finfish researcher (spanglies, reds and spaniards), but now work at Marinefarms as an aquaculture technician growing barra and dolphinfish in Exmouth.  Also studying OHS at tafe this semester to go with a management degree that I studied previously.  Will hopefully be getting my coxwain's soon to go hunt coral trout for broodstock at work when our license goes through. :) I also have run/owned fishwrecked for the last 5 years, write for the reeltime mag and have the telstra payphone contract for town as well.

Cheers,

Adam

My crust

Tue, 2010-02-02 12:22

I have done many varied things, including; managed a company manufacturing motorbikes in China; touring the world as part of the production team for the Crusty Demons shows; built decks and pergolas for a living; but my professional skills are in agriculture and environmental management.  I am an agronomist by trade, and now am a full time consultant in the climate change risk assessment and agricultural management fields.

My trade was a solo slaughterman but a crook back put and end to that many years back. From there to operator/ leadinghand /supervisor in the mineral sands industry ,took redundancy to go skipper shark fishing. Finally the back said "enough is enough, you fused some of me years back well now I'm going to fuse some myself",so now I'm retired and keep busy with Carnarvon sea rescue [pres] and one of the rescue boat skippers.

Office work sux

Tue, 2010-02-02 12:44

I've had plenty of variety in my work life. Was a deckie/cook on prawn trawlers in Gulf of Carpentaria about a hundred years ago. Spent a couple of years cruising SE Asia as crew on a cruising yacht. Worked in my spare time for Sorrento Quay Dive, back when Rick Hall owned the store, as either Divemaster or fishing charter deckie. Used to instruct scuba diving.

These days I'm Credit Supervisor for a mob in North Fremantle. Best office job I've ever had, and they will probably cart me out of here in a pine box.

Still, I'd rather be fishing... Roll on Saturday!

I am god, creator of this world, and many more like it.

did a small stint in universe building (the universe university), and biology to construct living organisms back about 49 zillion light years ago, and it basically just went from there.

actually, this planet and another one in a parallel universe (zygon 4), are actually just an experiment. you guys are lucky i gave you the "dominant specie" title for this world, because i gave the elephants on zygon 4 the "dominant specie" title, and they have nearly acheived travel at the speed of light. incredible!!

Have been in the mining industry as an Environmental Advisor for the past 6 1/2 years.  Awesome job, get to do something different every day ranging from relocating snakes to water monitoring to writing approval documents to maintaining our ISO 14001 certification.

Better still, work an8-6 roster with my husband at the same site, so we get a week every fortnight back home where we can fish to our hearts content (and dont have to fight to launch/retrieve the boat on the weekends)!

I'm an Environmental Health Officer - its actually got nothing to do with trees and is all about Public Health. We do all the stuff the Health Inspectors did and now with all these new laws coming in, about everything under the sun, we get to keep busy with lots more.... theres always something new popping up and you never know what you will be dealing with throughout the day.

Always thinking of a sea-change, jobs wise, but I am pretty happy with my current job. Lots of variety and the option for keeping inside when its raining or getting out when the sun is shining is always great.

I also have a brief background in Environmental Management so I do still care about the trees....

Previous to that I have been a slaughterman, processed animals for pet food, office cleaner, nightclub bar staff, nightclub security/doorman, a short stint as a crayfisherman and about 10 years as a metallurgist in various roles. I've probably missed something, but that'll do.

I started my electrical apprenticeship in 1999 and have been with the same company since.  But I'm not very good so don't ask me to do any work for you.  I once caused a house to burn down.  Oops!

Currently work as a counsellor for Centacare in Exmouth. So if you're up on a fishing holiday and get depressed at the thought of having to return to Perth waters - feel free to drop in. (I may not be able to "cure" you but it will make me feel better about my lot in life)
