what GPS to get???
Submitted by Tony Halliday on Mon, 2010-01-25 18:07
well with a new tub bought today, I'm going to need new electronics for it.
sounder is a no-brainer and will be a FCV585 Furuno,
but the stand alone GPS is the dilemma ???? was thinking Northstar / Navman, but I'm open to hear what others can advise as well. budget would be around $1000 max for the plotter and 6inch or bigger screen size.

HUMMINBIRD do a great Gps .
HUMMINBIRD do a great Gps . we have the 917c spit but have disconected the sound by tim as it interfeered with the furnuo 585. BUt as far a GPS go it is so full of detail and easy to use can not fault it it runs the navionics gold card. you can get the gps on it's own.

Lowrance
I would be looking at the lowrance Tony.

I could never go back to Navman/Northstar.
Also they are all owned ny Navico and from what I have read the Northstar brand has been shelved with no more R&D while they push forward with other brands ie Lowrance so you will continue to get fixes and software upgrades.

agreed with Lowrance
thats what I'd be getting. Or possibly Garmin, but for the price the HDS-7m it's a no brainer I reckon.

another vote for the lowrance
get the 8inch if you can stretch it, great combo with the 585 and I can see both from the back of my stabi whilst drifting for bottom fish.

Northstar/Navman no more!
They have discontinued this range of sounders/GPS so if you were to get one I think you would find it difficult later on for warrenties ect. Lowrancwe is the way to go in my opinion. I have a Navman and am not really happy with the C-Map compared to the Navionics.

I have the fcv-585 with a 1kw in-hull tducer
I use the Raymarine 435I gps plotter with Navionics cartography. The Raymarine is great and has the antenna built in. I sit it on the dash inside the windscreen and it shoots through the fibreglass roof - works great and is easy to use. With Navionics you can get a chart that does Esperance to Darwin. Hav had other gps's in the past and most newer ones are good.
The most important thing is the cartography - don't go for anything but Navionics or C-Map.

Tony
I had a look at the site and they seem as good as any,and the price is not bad,BUT,check to see how much the card is,as this can add another $250/350.to the overall.Just a thought as Im sure you noticed that.jersey

Dale new tub is a Bertram 25
Dale new tub is a Bertram 25 Nova, old boat, but with a newish Mercuiser MPI 425hp in it. Needs a little tlc and lick&polish, but perfect for the type of family and fishing needs I have.
Got a FCV 585 and tranny on order to collect on Tuesday, just the GPS now to decide on before the weekend, so next week can go out on the sea before I go back to work.

i have a lowrance next to my 585
highly reccomended. just a shame you can't link them so you can't plot a mark on the sounder
If I spent half as long fishing , as I do reading this bloody forum , I'd be twice the fisherman I am.

well decisions got a lot
well decisions got a lot simpler this week!!!
Navman / Northstar are pulling from the Aussie market and many others, leaving only Simrad & Lowrance from that companies line up of brands. Another GFC casualty it seems.
Rumor also has it that Raymarine is in a spot of bother as well, so I'm back to Furuno & Lowrance with dealerships and back-up on a unit.
Seems the GFC shake-ups will go on this year, still a lot of leisure product brands that have felt the lower disposable income follow drying up.
So it looks like a HDS-7 or HDS-8 vs a Furuno GP7000, as the best options, or go back to a PC based plotter system and a small back-up unit for peace of mind.
