What speargun do you use on scuba?

Hi Fellas,

Just curious to see what speargun you guys use when scuba diving?  I've heard from a few free divers that use rail guns though thought I would see what scuba divers prefer?

Can't decide between a Pneumatic 90 or a Rob Allen 90 rail gun... (to be used while on scuba)

cheers

Wayne

I use a  Mares gas gun, nice and compact.  It doesn't have the range of a big rail guns, but i you're head into every cave and crevice like me the compact gun is sweet.

have shot  some sweet fish with it

Mares Cyrano 970 for me. Easier to carry with a loop if your looking for that lovely little by catch when craying.

I am looking to add a railgun for just hunting fish though too.

hunterdive - what size is

hunterdive - what size is the Mares gas gun you have?

I think the problem I'm facing at the mo is that I like the small Pneumatic guns as they seem easy to take around when going for crays - though if I was just hunting fish then the rail guns seem a slightly better gun.

Perhaps I need to decide when I'll be using the gun most:)  How many of you guys take your gun down when going for crays?

its a Cyrano 700.  I agree

its a Cyrano 700.  I agree with Cammos, great for taking with a Cray snare as well, I  just hold them together.  It would be a bugger if or when you see that awesome fish and you only took the snare.    I have no problem with mine, but if I went again I would go slightly larger.

A mate has a couple of the 900s I think, they have been using them for years and still going strong.  They get a hiding almost every weekend throughout summer, plus a couple of big trip up north each year.

for Freediving, definalty a Rail gun, but for Scuba, you can't beat the compactness, and ease to load of a good quality gas gun IMO

I haven't bothered taking my cyrano out for ages with the ban on but that whopper cobbler I saw made me rethink it. Might have to get it out again!

hi fellas - I dropped into Hookah dive this arvo and had a chat to the bloke there.  With your feedback in mind, along with his comments I've decided to go for an air gun, either the:

Mares Cyrano 970 ($420)

OR

Cressi sub SL 100 ($325)

The bloke at Hookah said that Cressi sub is better value than the Mares though the Mares has a better name.

Has anyone got a Cressi sub?  Or can anyone say which one they would prefer?

I've used an Asso Seac Sub

I've used an Asso Seac Sub 90 for ages now, from Dive Warehouse on Scarb Bch Rd. A cheaper option than the two you've mentioned. I've only re-pumped it once in over 5 years, shot loads of fish from King George to 30+ kg WBG (in my profile pic). Great for poking under ledges and among weed, accurate and fast, easy to load (can take a couple of shots on one breath) and can fit in a large dive bag. My little brother is a bit taller and more recently got the size up (plus a 15 in a holster for that second holding shot) and has had some fun with Sambos.
