Furuno FCV 620 sounder and a Lowrance HDS 5m Chartplotter - great units, recommended and should come in close to your budget.

Was talking with Bruno

At all boat business a couple of days ago. He still has some Furuno's at the old price before their rise a few months ago. Diffrent strokes for diffrent blokes, I run  2 combo units one as sounder other on plotter. Nothing beats a good demo. He has several makes on the shelf to play with then make a call from there.

Good luck.

If you've got room on your console I suggest you go separate units. Best out there is the Furuno FCV 620L with 600w transducer. Chartplotter...plenty to choose from. Navman Tracker series, as mentioned above the Lowrance are great.

Its not just the brand. 2

Its not just the brand. 2 separate units will allow you to use both at the same time with bigger screen size. Navman are great value units but the Furuno is still one of the best sounder on the market. There's also the problem, if anything goes wrong with the power, then you still have either unit to use. Whereas a combo is only one unit. IMO you get better value with 2 units rathen than one combo.

Navman is #@$% (in my opinion).

Tue, 2009-09-22 07:57

I bought a Navman plotter 3 years ago and am still kicking myself that I didn't get a Lowrance. The Navman has got too much detail in close and not enough out wide. I was a support vessel for the Rotto swim last year and as I was navigating out of Thoms bay the unit just froze on the start up screen. I did not have a memory card in it and lost all of my spots (on the GPS). In my opinion Lowrance is the go.

Maybe

buy a pigeon pair of Lowrance HDS5's?

They'll communicate together, you can interchange the transducer/gps antenna line between units (if one unit should fail) and still keep functionality of sounder and gps with split screens. Should be able to bring that in at $2500. Or if you can massage the budget just beyomnd that $3000 mark, then maybe get a HDS7 (sounder) and a HDS5 (plotter).

Or if pairing them is not a major concern, then I'd get a Furuno FCV620 sounder and a Lowrance HDS5 plotter - that would be a sweet little combo.

im getting a lowrance HDS 7

Wed, 2009-09-23 16:17

im getting a lowrance HDS 7 unit put in today, cost $1,400 but $450 for the charts too.

replacing a Navman tracker 5600.
Nothing wrong witht he Navman what so ever, nice unit and very user friendly. I just needed charts outside of metro so decided to upgrade to the HDS unit. there charts have more detail in deeper water, which is where im tageting.
