Which flouro leader to buy?
Submitted by davewillo on Mon, 2017-03-27 12:22
Heading to Exmouth soon and need to stock up on leader. In the past I've usually used Jinkai or Black Magic tough trace but as I need more I figure I should go for flourocarbon.
Which ones have people found to be good or bad? Will be using 20lb up to 80lb for different outfits. Will be tying to braid with FG knots.
Appreciate your thought.

Fluorocarbon
All us staff and shop owner Ryan use Shimano Ocea and Blackmagic fluorocarbon with good results.

Hey Davewillo
when are you heading to exy?
we are having a 7 man trip straight after Easter. In exactly the same boat as yourself "pardon the pun" where use to use jinkai and black magic, however with fishing more ateificials than anything nowadays, looking for some reasonable performing f.c leader. I tell ya what, the larger breaking strains don't come cheap! About $50-$60 for 1x 50m roll of 80lb fluorocarbon. That's gonna get get expensive pretty quickly with the amount of grey coats around Exmouth!

leader
Sounds like there are a fair few on here heading up... Ill be up there from 21-30 April.
As for fc leader i use the Ocea - its tough leader and holds knots nicely, but as you say its not cheap stuff. I use it from 6lb right up to 80lb and have alot of faith in it hence why i keep buying it.
For standard leader and line for deep drop rigs (ie 200-300lb) the black magic tough has never let us down.

Why
For deep dropping and anything over 75m flourocarbon is a waste of money. We just use a good quality 150-200lb mono.
In shallow stuff and artificials we do but not for the deeper stuff.

Google "the truth about
Google "the truth about flourocarbon line" weve had similar bust offs with flouro on 80lb and thought we were getting reefed. Aparantly not. In the process of trialing quality monos which is 1/4 the cost and havent noticed much difference yet

I've done that and really
I've done that and really question the value of flouro in many instances! I just believed on face value that flourocarbon was much less visible than mono of the same breaking strain.
Maybe I should use up all my mono leader material after all!

Leaders
60Lb and under we use fluorocarbon leader ie casting/lures/jigging etc
80-120lb standard leader ie supple or tough for bottom bounce or GT fishing etc
300lb Supple leader for Super Deep ie 200-500m
Fluorocarbon is more invisible but we use it as it's thin and has hi-abrassion resistance.

Supple leader
Just curious as to why you specifically use the supple leader for deep drop instead of the tough?

I've used Black Magic fluorocarbon
And I've had too many inexplicable bust-offs. I think knot strength is the problem. I now stay with the original Jinkai, works well, reasonable price. All breaking strains from 40 to 120lb.

Interesting feedback. Some
Interesting feedback. Some very different views!
Might look to use flouro on my lighter casting outfits and stick with my mono for the others
Appreciate hearing the different thoughts on this!
cheers

Personally use mono, in my experience fluoro hasnt helped me catch any more fish than usual. Mind you I dont really use lures for very skittish fish like bream etc.
For bait fishing I'm convinced mono is just as good as fluorocarbon

There's definitely a lot of
There's definitely a lot of marketing hype and misinformation out there on flouro lines.
I've never experienced any problems with my mono leaders but was looking at the "invisibility" as a plus. Maybe not so much now! I run flouro in 2lb or 3lb for trout fishing and use a 6lb flouro leader for popping for whiting but they are shallow waters for spooky fish. Don't know if it'll matter as much casting stickbaits and SP's to queenies and trevs on 20lb or 30lb braid!
