during the winter months the whiting are spawning and thats usually when you get your larger ones. Saying that deeper water bigger whiting but also try around shallower sand holes and you should find some good sized ones.
Bout 32-33cm is the largest I've been able to get consistently. I find there's good whiting out past the three mile/5 fathom in the 16-20m range, but to get the bigger fatter ones I head out to the 30's. So pretty much as grantarctic1 found :)
Hi guys, thanks for the input. i have been finding plenty of small to mid size behind Garden Island in 20mtrs, inside the 5F bank, but i still need the big boys. king Geroge a around & great to catch, but big sand whiting are my target now the demersal ban is on
Not sand whiting but we catch yellowfin whiting off the beach up to 40cm every summer. Didn't believe my mates until they showed me the honey hole lol! Managed to get a 42cm specimen a few years back

In Perth, out on the boat there are plenty in the mid to low 30s. Have got them up to 38, but only cracked 40cm down in Esperance.
18 to 22m deep is a good depth to chase them , but i usually find the bigger ones out deeper in the 30m plus zone .

Head south of the wind mills into the 20's inside 5 fathom, last time I was out the smallest I got was 25cm and the biggest in the low 30's.
