Winch cable

My electric boat winch cable  is fraying and needs to be replaced and I am seeking advice as per below.

1. Should I replace with steel cable again or is there something better to use.(running it through a roller hook)

2. Any recomendations to where to buy from ( south of river)

Any further information also appreciated.

Dyneema has always worked for

Dyneema has always worked for me - no sharp broken strands to catch your fingers on when trying to lay it on the drum and much higher breaking load for the same diameter.

Spectra

I would have used Spectra to replace my cable, but I have a SupaWinch S5000 and when I rang them for advice they told me not to put spectra on it unless I replaced the aluminum spindle with a steel one.  Apparently the spectra gets tighter over time and can crush the aluminum spindle.  For that reason I went for a steel cable again.  When the winch gives up the ghost, I'll definately be getting something that can handle spectra....I hate handling the steel ones, especially when they start to fray.

Re dyneema or spectrum my

Re dyneema or spectra my understanding it is the same thing though 2 diff names due to 2 diff companies that have trademarked the name i.e both are made of Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene, or UHMWPE fibers. http://www.coastalwindsports.com/WhoseLine.html
How heavy is your boat? Rule of thumb is - to pull a 2 tonne boat requires 1/7th of that required to lift it, so therefore 2 tonne would require approx 300kg which allows a little for friction. Not a 100% sure what you mean by roller hook but if there are 2 parts of rope 1 fixed & the other on the winch spindle then you can half the 300kg as both parts would share the load so 150kg on the spindle would be hard pressed to crush it I'm thinking.

 Spectra, Dyneema, dynamica,

Spectra, Dyneema, dynamica, Dynex, Dynex Dux is all the same thing. spectra is the core fibre. It is just the what the manufacturer does with it that gets its name. 6mm double braid spectra has a breaking load of 3 or so tonne, after you tie a Knot in it, which, unless you are vertically lifting your boat, you will never see.

Getting Spectra double braid, in my opinion, is best for trailer winches as it has a polyester outer sheath, protecting the strands from UV and also any sharp edges.

Boating Hardware (Louis or chris) will have what you want. If you need a hand PM me. I used to sell and splice it in a past life.
