Woodies ramp boat fire
Submitted by southcity104 on Sat, 2014-04-19 12:50
While slipping the boat at woodies this morning there was an an explosion in the Cockburn power boat club. I turned and saw debris flying above a 30ft launch followed by smoke. The crew seemed to be ok and attempted to fight the fire but after the engine hatch was lifted it all went down hill. Anyways within minutes there was no saving. After the mooring lines melted off it drifted onto the rocks. I hope for the owners sake it was insured. A fair bit of damaged was caused to the pontoon ramp too.

Wow...
...that'll bugger your Easter weekend...very fortunate no one was hurt, or worse.
Big problem with inboards, or even inboard/outboard...most likely fuel fumes not being properly vented from engine room/compartment prior to startup.

I am, as I've said, merely competent. But in an age of incompetence, that makes me extraordinary.

Sad to see
It's always sad to see a boat come to an end like this. I assume it was a petrol engine in an enclosed space, and unfortunately it only takes a tiny amount of fuel a spark and them boom.
Commiserations to the owner.

I know this boat very well, my father in law owned it many years ago. It is a Thomas craft 35', powered by twin petrol 454 Chevy big blocks. Sad to see it end up like this, as I had many great times on board. Glad to hear no one was hurt.

what a bummer, a sad end.
I know there are lots of inboard petrols around but I picture it happening halfway to the islands-would you even get to the epirb and lifejackets?
Suprising maybe that a better fire suppression system hasnt been developed like a flash sensor to an automatic CO2 dump/fuel shutoff inside the enginebay.
Its not hard to see youve only got a few seconds if any to suppress it.
Sadly, another one in SA about the same time

Give a man a mask, and he'll show you his true face...
The older you get the more you realize that no one has a f++king clue what they're doing.
Everyone's just winging it.

Friend's are up at their
Friend's are now up at their shack in Morgan Rob - luckily not them (bit older).
Strangely enough last weekend he was coming home from the shack in his landcruiser when it caught fire and burnt to the ground - only had enough time to get out thrown a couple of bags from the back into the trailer and disconnect the trailer and push it away from the car.
Glad to hear everyone's okay in all instances!!

Anyone know any more about this incident.
Anyone know any more about this incident, I heard on the grapevine that a certain boat storage facility may have launched the boat and started the engines straight after refuelling?
