Work Ute Advice.
Submitted by Goodz on Thu, 2012-04-26 15:50
Just after a few opinions on those who know motors...
I'm looking at trading the old Hilux in for a more suitable work ute... I do colourbond fencing and put a fair bit of weight in materials on the back of the ute and then tow a full 6x8 tandem (braked) trailer which makes the poor Hilux struggle.
I need something that tows well and after some other options other than the obvious Landcruiser. Looking at around 30k. Obviously 4x4.
Cheers,
Ben.

What is the weight of your towing load and how old is your Hilux?
I'm a big fan of the Hilux, is there anything stopping you just updating? Throw some pump up shockers on the back if needed. Plus the lux will be cheaper than the cruiser and better on juice.

That's a good question, not
That's a good question, not exactly sure of weight, licenced to 2000kg... regularly take 4-5 loader scoops of roadbase and brickies sand.
it's a 2000 model, 3L diesel... really struggles to tow is the main reason I'd like something different... already spent 10k in repairs over the last 4 years, probably due it the abuse I give it.
Are the newer hilux's better suited to towing though?

2000 Model Hilux 3L motor so
2000 Model Hilux 3L motor so would probably be the live axle front with 2.8litre Diesel engine? If so then you only have a braked trailer tow capacity of 1500kg and unbraked of 750kg. I had the same hilux but now have a newer 2002 3.0L TD which is rated to 1800 braked. The 2005-2011 Hilux are only 2250kg as stated before but the new ones i think have gone up to 2500kg. We use plenty of Hilux's at work and so far other than panel damge(usually caused by us) not one of them has had an engine or driveline fault. We are starting to change the fleet over to Autos, dont know why?, but we use them to tow Tandem Axle Trailers full of stuff all the time. Keeping within the weight limits of course. They Tow very well i think, takes a while for the Turbo to kick in but once up to speed they hum along.
Personnally in my opinion for what you are saying you are doing and for the price you are asking i would just be looking at a Colorado or Dmax, both decent cars with reliable 3.0L TD engines that seem to never say die and they both have 3000kg braked towing capacity. Navaras are good too, just hate the poxy little 2.5TD, but if you want mega towing power(though be $55000+++) get a Navara ST550 with the V6 3.0L TD engine it has 550Nm of Torque!!!!!! No D/cab comes close :) (Still a new car though so not to many real life reviews).

nivara is the only way to go
nivara is the only way to go with towing capacity if you want that sort of ute....the hilux has a measly 2225kg towing capacity where as even the st-r navara has a 2800kg and the st-x has a 3000kg towing capacity. a nissan patrol is 3200kg towing. a land cruiser is 3.5ton

Hilux
The old 3l diesel couldn't pull a sailor of your sister! New ones are heaps better mate, but others such as the Navara etc are supposed to be pretty good as well.

Dry sand would be about
Dry sand would be about 1500kgs a cubic metre ... pending on size of your 4/5 scoops , but sounds like alot of weight to be regularly pulling around...a low K cruiser would be the go for me..

DONT BUY A NAVARA
the hilux & patrol have a realistic towing rating i braught a navara at the start of the year biggest $40000 piece of crap you can lay your hands on its got 7000kms on it now has been to nissan 6 times 2 different dealer ships & im not impressed i know other people that have them & theres 2 out of 8 that like them & having no dramas the list goes smokes more than my old cruiser with 580000 on it rattles like a 20 l drum with rocks in it if you go on a corrigated rd dont go over 20 kms an hour because you dont have any brakes you have to pump the peddle 5/6 times to get your peddle back & thats at 20 kmh just thats a safe speed so you dont hit any thing rear door seals dont seal so get ready for lots of cleaning when you go off rd dont belive the fuel rating it doesnt even come close oh year keep all your fuel reciets & only fill up at shell or bp because they will try & say the smoking engine is your fault cause you put dodgy fuel in it mate got stung with that one think it was 8k for another pump i might be wrong with the price there but i swear thats what he said another mate has had 3 clutches in his its done 30k oh yeah & today my brake peddle sinks to the floor when your at traffic lights i rang them but apparently thats normal as well & they wont fix that either im seeing a lawer atm & will be contacting to nissan australia to see what there responce is but there bigger inside & confier than a hilux i think thats the only good thing i can say about it but apparently all the faults ive listed it hasnt got any of them & it drives & sounds like a navara to them & they cant replicate corrigate roads so they cant test that fault
i left it with them for two weeks & told them to take it fishing or go for a drive & find some so they could rectify it but no i get it back with a couple of new noises less power & a little bit more $%$% $%$% $%$% $%$% $%$% $%$% $%$% $%$% $%$% off well thats my take on a navara

Not happy Wombat?
So, Wombat, I take it that you aren't really pleased with your Navara then...
Save the Whales! May as well - they won't fit in my catch bag!!!

Ive heard SOOOOO many stories
Ive heard SOOOOO many stories on the navara. I just bought the new bt-50 I know this desnt help at $45 000. Impressed so far. Has towed a 1500kg trailer 18 000 km in 4 months cant even feel it, leave people at lights. Only had 1 problem, bolts that hold gearbox (manual) fell out, supposedly common problem, loktight in and all is good. But know of plenty of happy older bt-50 lovers who have had little problems.

Hi cudbfishn, did you get the
Hi cudbfishn, did you get the 4 or 5 cylinder? Was looking at waiting for a couple of years since the new Ranger/BT50 have been out and reading real life reviews before i commit to buy one of them myself. Was looking at the 3.2L TD 5 cyl. One thing my mate said was the gates on the gearstick were pretty close on manuel and sometimes popped it into the wrong gear? Have you found this or is my mate just a crap driver? :)

Hey Buz,Yer its the 3.2
Hey Buz,
Yer its the 3.2 inline 5 dual cab 4x4, base model as I like rubber floors. Bull@#$% amount of torque. I got one of the first in the country, Id been umming and arring for like a year trying to decide on a new vehicle and I knew the bt50/ranger were coming out, did a hell of alot of research and test drove a few, as I tow a trailer 100% of the time I didnt want a 2.5ltr. The gates are close, real close but the only problem I get is I try and shift into "7th" when im sitting on 100 clicks as it really doesnt feel like your doing 100 and want to go faster, and yes this is with the trailer on. If your not towing I recomend the auto though as the manual is a bit of a pita as 1st gear is real short, so short that when I havent got the trailer on I take off in 2nd, but AWESOME in the sand, no real need for low range lol, reverse is short geared too so makes backing a breeze. When I bought it the bt-50 was 5 grand cheaper than the ranger so this steered me to the bt50. the ranger DOES ride better otherwise its pretty much the same, but with the trailer on it loads the springs and rides well, I reccon the bt50 rides better with the trailer on, also 5 grand gets you a hell of a suspension upgrade. With the trailer on im getting around 10.2 liters per hundred kms, 700kms to the tank. and its ALL city driving.

Thanks for that cudbfishn,
Thanks for that cudbfishn, sounds like its a beast for towing then! Great to hear a real life review on them. Still think i'll wait another year before commiting to buy, just to see what other real life reviews come out between now and then, but so far everything about them sounds great. As vain as it sounds i like the look of the Ranger more, more truck like, than sleek like the BT50, but as you stated other than cosmetics both basically the same.
Love the idea of 5 cyl 3.2L TD droooooooollllllll.
PS: sorry to Hi Jack your thread Goodz, but maybe this might be up you alley too :)
