I would replace it, particularly if it is a hydraulic style tensioner. ? So has it got a small hydraulic plunger / rod setup where you bolt it all in place and then pull a pin out and it then places tension on the idler pulley?

More important than the idler tensioner replacement is often the timing belt idler bearing replacement. In a marine environment it doesn’t take long for bearings to go south quick! And if the bearing starts to run dry or worse still cease, it will almost certainly snap the belt in the very near future.

With an outboard the size you have, once you have the belt off, the replacement of the idler pulley bearing and or tensioner, is only another 30 mins or so total work. With the cost of a replacement engine being $20k plus, I think it’s a no brainer to replace the extra timing belt bits whilst it is apart. You will only be kicking yourself if something happens otherwise.

Pretty sure it is a hydrauloc tensioner and you have to compress the pin to free io the belt
