Yellow box squid v Blue box squid for bait

Having used these new yellow boxed squid for the last few trips, I am desperate for the blue box variety to land on our shelves again.

The yellow boxed ones are way to big to use whole, and the carapaces are filled with vile brown muck. We found that the only way to use was to open the carapace up by slicing lengthways, scrape all the crap ot then cut the carapace up into large skinny triangles. That way they suited the two hook snells a bit better and we could make mulie squid sandwiches, that seemed to work ok.

The heads were obvioulsy a good size for a 10/0 hook, but some we had to slice in half as well.

Anyone else hate the yellow box variety?

Anyone know where the blue boxed ones are being sold still?

I thought the yellow box was

Mon, 2009-03-16 12:58

I thought the yellow box was just new packaging. However, lately they have been getting different squid to put in the boxes which are larger, have more 'pointy hoods' and the other stuff you mentioned Andy. Do the boxes say anything different on squid type? It could just be seasonal variation when the standard squids are not available, or some other sourcing/collection problem?

I spot to some guys at bluewater and they said the normal squid should be back to normal in a couple of weeks.

Edit: A little poking around suggests that they are in fact different species with different 'seasons'. My guess is what happened was that each is only availble for half the year, but we get stock over the off season, but perhaps they ran out of that stock and had to get the other species in preference to no squid.

What does it say on the box? (I knew I shoulda checked last time :p). Should be able to tell you which is which then.

we should be getting some lighter winds around this time of year so I will be heading out a heck of a lot more than I have been. Some decent bait will help, big fat gooey squid don;t cut it I'm afraid.
Supply and Demand...... I demand some smaller squid!Wink

Get some jigs and you dont

Mon, 2009-03-16 13:13

Get some jigs and you dont need to use bait :D

You even get an active (knife) and lazy (taikaburra) option ;)

More digging says the california squid are sept-march which makes it a bit odd we're not getting them now, so makes more sense that its a supply issue, and as the guys at the tackleshop said, hopefully it'll be back to normal soon.

get the blue boxes back we

get the blue boxes back

we found the same prob , the yellow box squid are way toooooo big even when using an 8/0 snell, maybe cut into 1/4 then on a single 8/0 it might be ok but as far as the amount of bait in the box for your $ it just aint worth it as you tend to use bigger baits than needed

Months

Mon, 2009-03-16 13:55

Andy your Months behind the times. Fish dont seem to like the big Arrow Squid in the Yellow Boxes compared to the Bue Box ones.

Been chasing some for ages. Been lucky I had a supply in the freezer but thats nearly gone now.

Agreed

Andy, totally agree with you mate, the yellow brand is not good, the size of these are huge, and I did the same thing, cut them up and removed the brown muck and cut them to size to fit my snells... maybe the yellow box and the size of the squid was related to a batch?

As far as i know, well last time i checked, yellow(jumbos) is all that is around at the moment in the Cali squid. Wa bait has been having trouble sourcing the other ones(blue/red) but shouldnt be too far away.

Cali squid!

Mon, 2009-03-16 19:32

Theres' two companys doing the californian squid from what ive gathered. Both are getting different squid and yes the red/blue box stuff is whiter/fresher/better/cleaner etc and its upmarket

The reason why the bait suppliers are getting the yellow stuff is becasue that stock didnt have the massive price increase so the bait guys opted that way from what i was "told". I 've spoken to my bait supplier and he said they've ordered in the "upmarket stuff" and due in soon. The cost will go up from what i've been told but we'll C soon i suppose!

As for catching my own fresh squid, i used too but found out very quickly that it curls up and hardens with saltwater contact. For that reason i buy shop squid/softer and when i've asked other anglers if they've had the same issues they've said yes!!!!
