29/2/12 - The ones that got away

29/2/12 - The ones that got away

Well after some serious efforts out wide and a lot of hours trolling for nothing recently, today turned out to be the day where a couple of 'to dos' were almost ticked off the list.  After having a lunch break chasing rubies (as pictured) we decided to go back on the troll to find that big blue, what we found around 3pm was a very angry striped marlin of around 70-80kg that smashed the lure on the short corner, jumped accross the spread spectacularly and threw the hook.  (This was with 50 seconds left on my half hour strike rotation)  Before we had time to say 'phhhark' with 17 seconds left on the clock the right rigger snapped out and bang, second stripey on and well hooked, jumped half way accross the ocean and settled in for a deep fight (No time for photo as we had to clear the spread).  15 minutes later and about 40m from the boat the hooks pulled as he was starting to come up, DEVOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.  Trolled for another 2 hours looking for more action but to no avail, so the leap year's from now on will be remembered for the wrong reason, 'the one that got away.'  Anyway, I'm off to cry myself to sleep. :(

Update for those interested, looks like they are cranking along and should be ready soon.  Have heard the hold up is with the break wall, really needs to go in before it gets opened otherwise theres going to be some smashed up boats trying to retrieve with the south wester.

Yesterdays feed 11/2/12

Nice 62cm BBone from yesterday and a couple of reds.  Only had a small window for diving as the tide was humming on the incoming and absolutely unbelievable on the outgoing (well for Exmouth anyway), the water went from crystal blue to the brownest brown within an hour. (Still stirred up due to cyclone Iggy)
