Violence

Well, Just found out a family member will be enjoying at least 8 months in the custody of Roeburn Prison with good behaviour or 15 without for some sort of assault back in February. No one in our family knew aside from his parents until he was sentanced this week and information is scarce at the moment.  I like to go out on the piss as much as anyone but I have never been a fighter.  If you like to neck a few even if provoked, one punch is self defence, if you tee off, you are facing time and possible future litigation through civil court.

Even if provoked, walk away, walk away, walk away, walk away, walk away, walk away, walk away, walk away, walk away, walk away, walk away, walk away, walk away, walk away, walk away, walk away, walk away, walk away, walk away, walk away, walk away, walk away, walk away, walk away, walk away, walk away, walk away, walk away, walk away, walk away, walk away, walk away, walk away, walk away, walk away, walk away, walk away, walk away, walk away, walk away, walk away, walk away, walk away, walk away, walk away, walk away, walk away, walk away, walk away, walk away, walk away, walk away, walk away, walk away, walk away, walk away, walk away, walk away, walk away, walk away, walk away, walk away, walk away, walk away, walk away, walk away, walk away, walk away, walk away, walk away, walk away, walk away, walk away and walk away again its not worth it.

Absolutely gutted.  Christmas certainly wont be the same.

Boat motor servicing

Hi all. I've  been quoted just over $800 for an annual service on my 2006 Suzuki 4 stroke. Is this a reasonable price to pay? Or should I be shopping around?

Cheers Andy

Belvoir Amphitheatre

Anyone been to Belvoir Amphitheatre for a show before?

What's the go with the 'seating' there, is it first in best dressed?  Any tips on where best to sit?

Marine Battery - Optima Blue

Hi everyone

My new Optima Blue has 2 terminals for the + and 2 terminals for the - (each side a short, wide stub and 4 cms away a seperate screw thread protruding)

My previous battery only had 1 terminal for the + and 1 terminal for the - (a short, wide stub with screw thread protruding up through the stub)

My question is, with the Optima Blue, do I somehow have to connect BOTH terminals per side?  Or am I ok just connecting the short, wide stubs)?

Geo bay/busso fishing

 Hey Guys,

I managed to get a cabin on the holy mile down in busso weekend after this one, and borrow a little tinnie for the weekend.

Just wondering what kinda stuff I should take to go for this time of year? I know that the bay is usually full of whiting and squid? So i was just thinking little rods and hand lines?

We were just gonna carry it down to the water from the campsite instead of heading out to a boat ramp, is it just a case of looking for some patchy ground and drifting over it? Or more of a anchor up and berly up method?

Cheers ,

Josh

New minimum size for rock lobsters caught recreationally

New minimum size for rock lobsters caught recreationally

Recreational fishers will be given a greater chance to catch a feed of WA’s iconic crayfish during next season, with the minimum size for recreationally-caught western rock lobster being reduced from 77 to 76 millimetres.

Department of Fisheries’ Senior Management Officer for Rock Lobster Graeme Baudains said Recfishwest recently approached the Minister for Fisheries, to discuss ways to boost lobster catch opportunities for the recreational sector.

“Having met with Recfishwest, the Minister has acted to change fishing regulations to allow for the reduced minimum size for the recreational sector,” Mr Baudains said.

“The minimum size is being dropped by 1 millimetre to help the State’s recreational rock lobster fishers achieve the five per cent catch allocation assigned to the sector under Integrated Fisheries Management. For commercially-fished western rock lobster the minimum size remains at 77mm.

“In recent years the recreational sector’s proportion of the total allowable catch level has been an average of 2.6 per cent.”

Mr Baudains said the Minister had also indicated he would consider more changes in the future, if needed, to further increase the recreational catch level within its overall allocation.

“Department of Fisheries’ researchers will be assessing catches over the upcoming recreational lobster fishing season, which runs from next Tuesday (15 November) to Saturday 30 June next year (2012), to see exactly what boost is provided to the catch,” he said.

“Both the Minister and the department are committed to a management framework that provides the opportunity for both the commercial and recreational sector to catch their allocated shares of the sustainable catch level.”

A licence is required for recreational rock lobster fishing. Licences and other information for Western Australia’s recreational rock lobster fishers are available from Department of Fisheries’ website at www.fish.wa.gov.au.

The size of a western rock lobster is measured from the ridge between the two spikes at the front of its head to the back of its carapace.

Details and diagrams are included in a handy new brochure that can be found at Department of Fisheries’ offices, Fisheries’ information outlets and online. Look for the Recreational Fishing Guide Rock Lobsters 2011/12 via the new rules for lobster link on the front page of the Recreational Fishing section.

Artificial Reefs

A mate of mine emailed me these links about artificial reefs that the WA government are looking into deploying along the WA cost to increase wild fish stocks, including taller, steel-frame skeletons could be deployed in deeper water for the threatened stocks of pink snapper, baldchin groper and dhufish.

I was wondering if anyone had anymore information on these reefs and any thoughts (positive or negative) regarding them.

Apparently they are looking to deploy them in the pibara and northwest initially (within 2 years).

mid week funny

How true this is. What in the world happened?

Class of 1962 vs Class of 2010
You should know that by today's standards none of us was supposed to ever make it.
HIGH SCHOOL -- 1962 vs. 2010
Scenario 1:
Jack goes quail hunting before school and then pulls into the school parking lot with his shotgun in his truck's gun rack.
1962 - Vice Principal comes over, looks at Jack's shotgun, goes to his car and gets his shotgun to show Jack.
2010 - School goes into lock down, FBI called, Jack hauled off to jail and never sees his truck or gun again. Counselors called in for traumatized students and teachers.

Scenario 2:
Johnny and Mark get into a fist fight after school.
1962 - Crowd gathers. Mark wins. Johnny and Mark shake hands and end up buddies.
2010 - Police called and SWAT team arrives -- they arrest both Johnny and Mark. They are both charged with assault and both expelled even though Johnny started it .

Scenario 3:
Jeffrey will not be still in class, he disrupts other students.
1962 - Jeffrey sent to the Principal's office and given a good paddling by the Principal. He then returns to class, sits still and does not disrupt class again.
2010 - Jeffrey is given huge doses of Ritalin. He becomes a zombie. He is then tested for ADD. The family gets extra money (SSI) from the government because Jeffrey has a disability.

Scenario 4:
Billy breaks a window in his neighbor's car and his Dad gives him a whipping with his belt.
1962 - Billy is more careful next time, grows up normal, goes to college and becomes a successful businessman.
2010 - Billy's dad is arrested for child abuse , Billy is removed to foster care and joins a gang. The state psychologist is told by Billy's sister that she remembers being abused herself and their dad goes to prison. Billy's mom has an affair with the psychologist.

Scenario 5:
Mark gets a headache and takes some aspirin to school.
1962 - Mark shares his aspirin with the Principal out on the smoking dock .
2010 - The police are called and Mark is expelled from school for drug violations. His car is then searched for drugs and weapons.

Scenario 6:
Pedro fails high school English.
1962 - Pedro goes to summer school, passes English and goes to college.
2010 - Pedro's cause is taken up by state. Newspaper articles appear nationally explaining that teaching English as a requirement for graduation is racist. ACLU files class action lawsuit against the state school system and Pedro's English teacher. English is then banned from core curriculum. Pedro is given his diploma anyway but ends up mowing lawns for a living because he cannot speak English.

Scenario 7:
Johnny takes apart leftover firecrackers from the Fourth of July, puts them in a model airplane paint bottle and blows up a red ant bed.
1962 - Ants die.
2010 - ATF, Homeland Security and the FBI are all called. Johnny is charged with domestic terrorism. The FBI investigates his parents - and all siblings are removed from their home and all computers are confiscated. Johnny's dad is placed on a terror watch list and is never allowed to fly again.

Scenario 8:
Johnny falls while running during recess and scrapes his knee . He is found crying by his teacher, Mary. Mary hugs him to comfort him.
1962 – In a short time, Johnny feels better and goes on playing.
2010 - Mary is accused of being a sexual predator and loses her job. She faces 3 years in State Prison. Johnny undergoes 5 years of therapy.

It show how stupid we have become!

Don't mess with Fisheries...

Court issues fine to fisher who obstructed Fisheries officers

A 23 year-old Baldivis man has been ordered to pay fines, an additional mandatory penalty and court costs totalling almost $3,000 for obstructing Fisheries officers, taking a protected crab and not having a Recreational Fishing from Boat Licence.

In Rockingham Court last week (Thursday 3 November), Jason Lee HOSON was issued the order in relation to offences that occurred in December last year (2011).

The court was told two uniformed Fisheries and Marine Officers had approached Hoson and another man, who were retrieving a vessel from the water at Rockingham’s Palm Beach Boat Ramp.

It also heard that when he was asked whether he had any crabs, he took an esky from the vessel removed two crabs from it and threw them into the water without warning.

By throwing the crabs into the water, the offender had prevented the officers from measuring them. He was fined $1500 on the obstruction charge.

Hoson was also fined $700, plus an additional mandatory penalty of $40, for having a spawning female (a totally protected fish) among the crabs remaining in the esky.

In addition, the fisher was unable to produce a Recreational Fishing from Boat Licence and a subsequent check of the licensing database revealed that Hoson did not hold the required licence. He was fined $600 for not having the licence and also ordered to pay court costs of $121.95.

Department of Fisheries’ South Metro Compliance Manager John Breeden said, while most fishers did the right thing, this case was a reminder that everyone was required to follow the lawful direction of Fisheries and Marine Officers.

“The officers have a job to do to ensure that Western Australia’s fishing rules are enforced and there is a community expectation that we do that,” Mr Breeden said.

“One of the crabs remaining in the esky was a spawning female and it is vital that they remain protected to ensure the future of WA’s crab fisheries.

“It is up to fishers to be aware of whether or not they need a licence for the fishing activity they are involved in and what the rules apply to the species they are targeting.”

Carbon Tax! will it effect our life styles like fishing etc?

with the carbon tax now through the Senate, what will be the impact on you and fishing etc?

http://www.news.com.au/business/government-sticking-to-23-carbon-price/story-e6frfm1i-1226188450227

When will they next leave a "sports pollution tax" next?

Will we see some form of " carbon leavy" on outbards, 4x4's and motor cycles ( off road ones ) etc...

Old Bob the Brown Greenie is in his element and on a role and will push even harder now to get more Greens policy through and steam role the Ginger Ninja...

just watch my words... he got a finger and he is about to go take himself an arm....

ps goverment say it will cost you an extra $10 a week approx~ does this seem realistic to slow down pollution or just will become a nuisance tax, like parking meters in cities etc...

My Rookie Mistake

Well after been away from home for 7 weeks due to work and weddings in Perth, I finally got back to Broome and keen to wet a line with all the good reports of decent barra numbers being caught.

Packed the boat up, mate came round and we were off to the creek. Thought there hadnt been rain around so took a short cut accross a section of flats and me saying "yep been through here before when it wet and its not pretty" only to met by wet slippery clay..... 20meters in and all four tyres covered in it and car was now just spinning on the spot.... Abit of manouvering back and forwards but it was like driving on ice.... Yep, stuck.. damn. Luckily it was just the surface that was wet and we didnt sink too much so unhooked the trailer, managed to get the car out onto the dry stuff 50m ahead, then had to use the anchor rope to pull the boat out of its hole...  Anchor rope broke as the trailer was sitting quite deep in it now too... A quick new knot was tied and we were out... Sweet. Not too much of a drama really. Only wasted 45 mins or so....

Boat in the water and the first troll was underway, talking about how much worse the day could get already my mate has reached into the esky to get a drink only for me ask if he could could pass my BANANA to me.....

As soon as I said that I knew I had buggered up.... Seriously... My mate couldnt beleive it looking at me with a look of wanting to throw me off my own boat...

I couldnt beleive I would do such a thing as Im a big believer of NO BANANAs on the boat after a few experiences down Perth way a few years back... So all in all I caught bugger all, And my mate 1 small MJack for a long day on the water...

So has anyone else made a rookie mistake like this that your mates are never going to let you forget too?

Cheers

Mark.

My Movember

Hey guys!

The month of November is designated as Movember. This is a month to raise awareness for prostate cancer research. During this month, men participate by growing their moustache (the Mo) and to raise donation money toward prostate cancer research. I've been growing my moustach for a week...so far it is a hideous patch of whiskers, hahaha!

My lab works directly on prostate cancer, specifically looking at radiation response in prostate cancer cells and compare the repair of DNA in normal and tumour cells.

We study DNA repair since this is the primary mechanism in which radiation therapy (as well as most chemotherapy) damage and kill cancer cell (and also normal cells to some degree).

By studying the DNA repair pathways, we can identify proteins that are required for DNA repair. We can then investigate drugs that specifically prevent the function of these protein; thus enhancing the cell killing effects in tumour cells. At the same time, knowing how DNA repair is different between normal cells and tumour cells, we can also find ways to deliver more accurate dosage of radiation to minimize killing of normal cells surrounding the tumour. These off target effects may affect normal function of the remaining healthy prostate, as well as side effects to the colon and bladder that results in a poorer quality of life in patients under treatment (such as loss of bladder and colon control, loss of sexual function...etc).

We receive direct funding from Prostate Cancer Canada. Our lab members are sporting our Mo to show gratitude for their continual support of our work, as well as to raise more awareness.

If you can spare a dime (or more), it would be great to pledge just $2 per week for the month of Movember toward our group of researchers. You can find my personal page as follow:

http://ca.movember.com/mospace/2501172/

We just started the page today...so it is lacking pictures...but we will be getting some pictures up soon.

You have always been a great crowd and show your appreciation for my report. I hope you can show the same interest toward this great cause!

Thanks for any and all contributions you can make toward the cause!

If you like, leave a comment so I (we) can thank you personally. :D

dslr lens advice

Hey guys

I'm looking to purchase a Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 (either vc or non-vc) for my Canon 1100D to replace the kit lens. Was wondering if anyone has had any experience with these lenses? Is the vibration conrol worth the extra $100-$150?

Going to go grey market as i am a poor student and cant afford aussie prices (would support my local shop is i could afford to). I know there may be warranty issues but im willing to risk it. Anyone had any bad experiences with DWI ordering of ebay?

p.s if anyone is looking to offload one of these lenses or the comparable sigma or canon lenses let me know.

If anyone interested details of the gear for sale in the latest for sale section on the site.

Diver dies off Albany

Man dies free-diving off Albany coast

Albany sea rescue

POLICE have recovered the body of Thomas Nicholson, a 30 year old Albany man who died while free-diving off the coast of Bald Head on Sunday morning.

The man was diving without SCUBA equipment with a group of mates when he failed to resurface just before 10am on Sunday about 8km south of Albany.

Late Sunday afternoon police divers recovered the man's body 20m below the surface and 50m off the coast of Bald Head.

Albany Search and Rescue and Police divers from Perth spent the day trying to recover the man's body.

Senior Sergeant Peter McLean stressed the man had not been the victim of a shark attack and probably died from a lack of oxygen.

“There is definitely no shark involved I can tell you that, maybe he went a bit deep and he ran out of air," Snr Sgt McLean said.

The man is believed to have become separated from his friends during the dive.

Snr Sgt McLean said police will be interviewing the man’s two friends to try and find out what exactly happened.

advice needed - a liquid rubber coating to seal a shed

G'day all, I'm declaring war on my stratco garden shed and thinking of spraying it with liquid rubber around the bottom section so as to prevent water from entering.  The shed's on a concrete pad and I've siliconed around the base numerous times but water still gets in through the corrugated lip.  I've even siliconed the corrugated lip and it's spaces.

Has anyone used a spray/brush on liquid rubber that also seals up gaps?  Brand?  Store?

Many thanks
