Submitted by schecky on Mon, 2008-12-01 20:30i wanted to make a sp outfit but spend little money as i dnt use it heaps
so i bought a whippy little graphite rod off otoshi
and bought this little abu cardinal from big w for 30 bucks
i wudnt usually buy big w stuff but i think it wasnt a bad buy for what i paid, really smooth and nice to handle
so i spooled it with 4lb fireline

Pilbara Tropical Fishtank Weekend
Submitted by Kelvin8r on Mon, 2008-12-01 18:23So my mate came up from perth on thurday night for a spot of fishing. I may have talked up my fishing skills a little, but i was fairly confident i could get him onto some edible and good fighting fish.
The new Pajero is getting a tow ball fitted on tuesday so i couldnt get the boat in on friday, cause my mate usually takes the boat out with his car, and he was working so we headed out to the bridge on the way to Point Samson with Fordy and the old girl.
Fordy hooked up to the biggest Scat i have ever seen, and would look fantastic in my fish tank back home. I hooked up to what i think was a baracoota, only to jump off right as i was lifting it out of the water.
Fish: 1 - Us: 0
On came Saturday and we got the boat in and headed out towards rosemary island. We had a troll past tish reef for no joy, and as the weather was looking half decent, we headed out to the patch. As soon as we anchored up, he heard this huge splash in front of the boat, so we turned around to see what it was, and a few seconds later, this massive mako shark launched out of the water, i estimated it to be about 6 and a half ft. Bloody awesome sight, still stoked about it.
We hooked up to some nice fish, only to be swallowed whole buy the sharks, i hooked onto a beauty mako shark, with a nice fight and another big launch out of the water. Great fun.
Fordy hooked up to yet another shark, and with a guide tour of our anchor rope, this is the end result
With all that shark fun, we headed to Chookie Bay for a bbq and then headed home.
Fish: 2 - Us:0
Round 3 - Sunday! With the weather finally giving us 1-3 knots, we heading out again, this time around Enderby Island over to bare rock. The water was beautiful, so it was near on full speed ahead. Our last few trips out to the rock have seen us pull in some nice Coral trout, so i was confident i could put fordy onto a trout. So off our lines go down to the bottom, and out came the bites. Fordy got excited when he got a bit and was hooked on. This the result...
Another nice addition to the fish tank back home. Anyway back it went, and few bites later, and a big solid hookup for Fordy.
Another shark, and another bust off for the big fella. A few more drops and and a few more of those pesky red striped cod thingys and that was about it. The girls started to get a bit sea sick so up came the anchor and we headed for a troll around bare rock for again, no joy! We took off to the small island next to Goodwyn Island. I think this is my new favourite island, a small beach to ourselves, beautiful water, a reef just off the beach about 6m deep. We set up the bbq and had a swim there.
A small troll on the way home, for again no joy and that was it. The fish had beaten us.
Fish:3 - Us:0

Gracetown
Submitted by wrassinator on Mon, 2008-12-01 15:21Just joined the site - very impressed, seems to be a great outlet for all that time you can't spend fishing. After years of surfing the south west, i'm dead keen to do some bottom bouncin down that way before Xmas. Hope to stay in Gracetown.
Can anyone give me some rough guides as to where there may be some ground? Looking at the charts it seems to drop off pretty quick to 50m then to 100m only about 20km out. I guess the old adage of work the contours would be a start but any more specifics would be great.
Any guidance greatly appreciated guys,
Cheers,

I dont have a boat, so scoop net is kinda my only option. Im not familliar with busselton area also, so if you guys could give me enough detail for location for me to put into my gps to find it, that'll be very good!

Our Day on the Water 29/11
Submitted by Faulkner Family on Sun, 2008-11-30 19:05Well the weather turned out better than i thought it would , got a bit choppy at one stage then died down again
We went out to the 90s and checked out a few old spots. We had a few really big drops but in a whole we got a good feed and PB so what more could you ask for.
Russell got his PB Snapper approx 9 kilo and a Queenie that went just over 6.5 kg . Which is a change because he never normaly catches much *LOL* a friend on the radio had to pick himself up off the floor when Russ told him what he had caught *LOL*.
![]()
Feeling really happy with his catch and at out fishing Sandy for once but this was to be short lived *LOL*
Sandy first hook up was on the winch two nice reds
then straight away Sandy Xzoga rod went off
![]()
First hook up on the new rod and it did exactly what they said it would took all the pressure off Sandys back and performed brilliantly .
Sandy had a double hookup but one dropped about half way up.
![]()
So all in all Russ 1 pinky ,1 queenie ,1 red a small sargent baker and a foxy
Sandy 4 Reds , 1 foxy and 1 skippy
So he got beaten again Russ 5 Sandy 6 but took it out with the weight *LOL*
Russ thought he would keep this one to use as Dhufish bait just the right size
![]()
Also like to warn you all about this boat it not only does not play fair but cuts you off doing thirty knots and put you right into all its wake *LOL* guess who ????
![]()
waving to add insult *LOL*

Dive Gear?
Submitted by Watto069 on Sun, 2008-11-30 18:32Well with all the talk about diving for crays it has got me thinking about upgrading my gear. Just wondering what your thoughts are on certain brands and there value for money. What sort of gear do you use? I currently have a scuba pro setup but it is fairly old. Have you seen any sales on lately for scuba gear or any good websites selling gear. I'm stuck at work in Tom Price so haven't been able to get to any shops down home to see if any sales are on.

Submitted by tango and cash on Sun, 2008-11-30 18:07I am looking at buying a VHF radio for my new boat. I am looking at the Navman (Northstar) but am not sure if I need one with DSC? If I buy one without DSC will it become defunct like the old EPIRBS?
Also I take it I need to buy a antenna seperatly, any advice on this?

Ocean Ettiquete gone to "Kaos"
Submitted by Albee Mangles on Sun, 2008-11-30 14:52Normally i keep my mouth shut on these issues, but Saturday morning i had it happen to me, and i'm gonna speak up.
Fishing out at Hall Bank Saturday morning, been at anchor for over an hour, about 10m off the reef, when a big stinker, "Khaos" or "Kaos" decides to anchor up a good 100m away and puts up a dive flag. A couple of divers hit the water, swim around for a bit, before coming underneath me, and cruising around in a close radius directly under my anchored yak for a good 10-15mins before i decided to move, as all fish had bailed, and i was sitting in a fishlless spa bath with a bubble pool all around me.
Now i had an anchor line down, and a suspended berley pot a meter or so above the bottom, also was banging on my hull with a knife butt while yelling obcenities at these guys, so don't give me the "we didnt see you" bull$hit..
I went over to the boat and explained a lesson in ettiquite may be required. You gauys are wanker$, honestly, its a big ocean out there, get a frikken brain.

Making the best of two great days!
Submitted by Anonymous on Sun, 2008-11-30 14:22
** With Fridays weather looking the goods, Kasey came out for a dive and crayfish the target. We ended up with a feed, did a new recon dive which was good to suss out another spot and all in all a great day on the water. Cheers KC, good to catch up again and i hope the lost cray doesnt haunt you too much mate
Kasey holding up the crawlies!
Another shot!
** With Saturdays weather looking even better i decided to hit the water again this time to target KG's offshore. The winds & water clarity were awesome so i got a good vibe. Took out a mate and we both did a drop on a few of my KG spots. The first few drifts resulted in a legal size Dhu coming onboard (released) then a 5 kg Dhufish which was kept. I love Dhufish but was after KG's but a welcomed bycatch for sure. On the next drift my mate got a 8kg Dhufish (weighed) that was his PB so he was wrapped and caught on baitcaster gear & KG hooks.
With a few descent Dhufish onboard I was thinking of changing my target species as no KG in sight. I decided to keep on persisting on different angles to the offshore KG grounds thinking i'll find em hiding some where. I did say to my mate that once we get one or two they seem to come on from there and he wasnt disapointed. We ended up with 8 plump KG's and 2 Dhufish, left them for another day and came in early which is unusual for me
.....had a cook up last night and the Dhu & KG in chicken/crumbed batter........mmmmhhhhhhhhh delish!

Submitted by Justin Poole on Fri, 2008-11-28 21:01Hi
Just picked up my new unit today, can any one recomend any setting to optimise its use? I got the 600watt transom mount transducer.
Is there any value hooking it up to my gps?
Any help would be greatly appreciated, I intend on reading the book inside out and back to front, even though experience is far better.
Thanks

Bottom Bashing outfit for Exmouth - recommendations?
Submitted by HuggyB on Thu, 2008-11-27 18:42While the TLD25 has served me well, I want to step up a notch in class and get myself an outfit for Exmouth next year. I have a rough idea of what I will get, but I'm interested to see what other people would recommend. This is for bottom fishing only, no jigging or trolling etc.
I guess the only stipulations are: fishing 30 - 120m, I've been told to run 80lb braid (and I want 300m+ on the reel), OH set-up and nothing weighing 13kg. Budget is basically open chequebook (thanks for the contracts Woodside LOL) but I dont want to spend $3000 for the sake of spending $3000 if that makes sense.
Recommend away......

White Pointer

Anyone thinking of going diving in between Garden and Carnac Islands, think again. In the last two nights a white pointer has been taking snapper from the side of the boat just as you go to net them. Will try and take pics, if fast enough.

Helicopter rescues stranded fishermen off Exmouth
Submitted by Adam Gallash on Thu, 2008-11-27 11:37TWO men have been rescued by helicopter after their fishing boat ran aground on a reef north-east of Exmouth Cape early today.
The
60 foot vessel Blue Horizon suffered battery failure and the skipper
was unable to restart the vessel after it ran aground in North Muiron
Islands.
A distress call was made around 5.30am morning and a nearby tender arrived and took the two men to shore.
They were later flown by helicopter back to Exmouth.
A 22-year-old man and his 23-year-old fishing companion were unhurt in the incident.
Salvage of the boat will be arranged by the owner on the next high tide.
