spiral wrapped baitcasters
Submitted by HuggyB on Thu, 2008-12-11 12:33Anyone got one?
Are they inherently any better than a standard baitcaster?
Can anyone give a comparison or pros and cons to a spiral wrapped baitcaster?

Back to Pinaroo
Submitted by Colin Hay on Thu, 2008-12-11 07:43HOPING the tailor were still around, five hardy souls (Jody, Sherbs, Dean, Doug and myself), headed down to Pinaroo Point last night. While a solid breeze and fair amount of weed made the conditions far from ideal, it looked like it was going to be a really good night when Jody, Doug and I arrived to see two of Sherb and Dean's rods bending right over with line screaming off their reels.
The excitement was mounting in the hope that at least one of the rods had a mulloway attached as Dean and Sherbs settled in to try and stop whatever was on the other end. After a bit of a tussle, Dean's line came free and then it was up to Sherbs. Some five or 10 minutes later he had a pretty angry, flapping ray on the sand. A bit of manhandling, a few pics and the ray was soon headiong off at a rate of knotts. We weren't sure if Dean had also had a ray on or if the lines had crossed and tghe one ray was pulling both lines out.
After that thigs quietened down as we tried to find the best way to get our baits to hold in the right spot without getting weeded up.
While there was some sporadic bites, the catch was restricted to one herring landed by Dean until I managed a pretty decent tailor.
That was pretty much it for the night, with the wind and weed winning out. There were some fish there, but the tricky conditions made solid connectionds hard to come by.
Hopefully summer will eventually arrive and we will get a chance to really see what is down at Pinaroo Point.
Sherbs took a few pics, so I expect he will post them up when he gets a chance,
All the best, Colin Hay

NOR newbie
Submitted by Brendo on Tue, 2008-12-09 19:19Hey all,
Have been floating around on the forums for the last week or so and thought i'd sign up and say G'day!
As the topic says im a newbie and trying to find my way around and learn as much as i can about fishing and general boating in the future.
I recently got my RST and am currently in the market for a boat around the 15-20k mark. I was originally looking at fibreglass hulls (fraser, carribean etc) but after some thought and lack of boat handling experience i am thinking it may be a smarter choice to go for an ali hull (bonito/trailcraft) to try and save some $$$ on possible hull repairs! If anybody is looking to pass on there pride and joy and around this price range please pass on the details and i will be keen to have a look! (looking for anything between 16-20 foot).
I am currently looking at a 1996 bonito 170 with a 70hp johnson on the back. Has anybody had one of these before? Any feedback would be much appreciated.
Cheers,
Brendo

thinnest diameter 50lb braid
Submitted by HuggyB on Tue, 2008-12-09 16:42In essence, I need to run as much backing as humanly possible on my 10wt fly reel, so thinner is better!
At the moment it holds about 200yds of 30lb dacron and a 10wt fly line, but as most know dacron is like rope in comparison to braid and I wanna up the poundage and increase the capacity.
So I guess I am looking for the lowest PE rating/highest BS line available. So what else is available beside the spools of gold (Varivas)?

illegal Cray fishing
Submitted by Bodie on Tue, 2008-12-09 12:57have heard that this morning the fisheries inspected a boat coming back into geraldton after he had been out getting crays.
He had his boat limit "12"
But they searched the boat and found an additional 25 crayfish onboard.
apparently they searched his house also, finding under size crays and equipment for illegal selling of crayfish.
He then had his $100,000 razorline confiscated.
Personally i hope they can sell his boat to someone for $1,000 then fine him $99,000 for the crayfish ontop.
dirty dog....
No doubt this wouldnt be the only case going around during cray season.

Swan crabs
Submitted by Bodie on Mon, 2008-12-08 10:19Hey guys
Well this time of year i try head out just before xmas (Day or 2) and try pick up a feed of crabs for xmas day.
Usually i head out off mandurah, but from all reports it seems they may not be big enough before xmas.
Drove down the Fwy on the weekend and nocticed boats netting along the fwy.
Just wondering where is a good spot to head, and are they getting any good crabs in the river at the moment.
Saw the report from one of the FW members when they went for a dive, but curious to know if any one been trying the nets?
Cheers
Bodie
