Abu Garcia 6501C4
Submitted by otoshi on Mon, 2008-10-06 11:37hi guys, was looking at the Abu Garcia 6501C4 (lefty).
looks really good (to me) but actully have no idea about it.
wanted to get it but ofcoz not before getting some advice from anyone
here who has been using overhead reel. the price for the unit is $186.
is it worth its buck? reason is becoz my daiwa 100TSHL(still under warranty)
is damage (worm gear not spinning) and the repair would cost the same
price as buying a new unit. any advice are most welcome.

Trolling advise
Submitted by Rodrat on Sat, 2008-10-04 13:28Hi
I am after some advise for trolling mainly up north.
I have a teaser with a red and white bird at the top
trailed with 5 lrg squid.
How far from the back of the boat should it be placed?
Also, is a witch doctor better than a teaser for trolling?
I was going to have both but with only having two people on board and four rods out i thought it may be too much to try and get it all onboard when we get a hook up.
Any tips or advise appreciated.
Cheers

Good rod and reel setup
Submitted by Watto069 on Sat, 2008-10-04 10:42Hi All
I'm looking for a good bottom bouncing setup eg rod and reel. As I have just bought a new boat I don't have much experience in the good quality gear that is avaiable. Can anyone suggest what brands of rods and reels I should be looking at.
Thanks

Tackleshop Customer Etiquette
Submitted by SHizz on Fri, 2008-10-03 18:19I have been in the fishing tackle industry for quite some years now. Its a tough industry, we don’t just sit around talking fishing all day like some of you may think. Now I am leaving the industry I thought I would do it some good by explaining a few things from a tackle store workers point of view. Obviously these are my own person views, but i think a few things that are often overlooked need to be put out there. Hope these make sense...
Firstly and probably my most proper point, Despite what you may think, there is literally next to know money in high end fishing gear. Rods and Reels especially, the margin is literally pennys sometimes which is what you have to do to be competitive in a cut throat market.
Alot of people think its quite easy to knock a large chunk of the price, when often you only make 10 % mark up on a reel, if that. If it takes an hour to sell a $1000 outfit, when you take out costs like to pay staff, rent, time to spool etc its alot of work for not much return.
Bait is a similar thing, we literally sell this for cost or next to no margin. If you want good local bait, you pay for it. Like everything, as supplies getting slimmer, costs go up. In other words, dont ask for discount on bait.
Dont buy overseas, Support your local stores, or soon there wont be any to go to! Alot of people buy gear overseas, and then come into local stores bragging about it. Good luck with warranty issues tho, big companys are clamping down on who can claim what, dont be shocked if your hit up with a big service bill when something goes wrong if its brought overseas.
Thirdly, If you have old crummy fishing gear, dont bother fixing it, just replace it. There is alot of hassel involved in repair old reels, and with the price you can buy semi decent gear these days its just not worth it. Unless ofcourse it is sentimental, then you cant put a price on it.
As with re-building rods, a lot of work goes into stripping down a rod and rebuilding one, so dont be shocked by the price they charge. Rod building is a trade, just like a brickie or a painter, you pay the price they set because they have the skills to do it and you dont.
If you want your reels serviced, make sure there is something wrong with it first. Often you will put apart a reel, thats perfectly fine, clean it and grease it and suddenly it doesnt feel as smooth. If nots not broke, dont fix it!
When asking tackleshop employees a question, dont counter their answer with a "oh nah thats wrong, i do it this way" . If you already know the answer, dont ask the question and attempt to make yourself look superior over the staff. Everyone has their own techniques. How often do I tell someone a way I do something, to be shut down in a "your a dumbass" manor. I'm not the kind of person to take offence but some people would, just something to keep in mind.
Opening hours are another minor issue, tackleshop employees have lives too. Often we work 6 days a week, so please avoid coming in at 525 when the doors close at 530 to be shocked when we have to ask you to leave. Alot of stores are open upto 60 hours a week on average, im sure you can find time to come within the stores opening hours.
Um well thats just about it for now, Im sure there more things I could ad.
Put it this way, us tackleshop employees dont get paid that well(its retail, we’re slaves to the man) but love our jobs, which is why we do it. But customers need to see it from the otherside of the counter for a change.
And remember, nice customers get happier staff in return.
Well thats it, im off for a 4 month road trip, seeya!

help with Barra lures
Submitted by Tony Halliday on Fri, 2008-10-03 11:24I'm off to the tackle shop in Jabiru later today to get some lures. I know the local guy will give us some good advice, but what would be the top five lures you guys in the know would suggest for Barra on the South Aligator river area ( NT) and up in Arnhem Land.
I'm up here for maybe a month or so on work, so I get some time off to chase a fish or two.
At the moment most fishing will be billabong and shore based, until we can get a hire boat in from one of few rentals in the area.
cheers
Tony

John Ford on Radio
Submitted by Colin Hay on Fri, 2008-10-03 10:29Former WA Fishing Minister, John Ford, was just on the ABC urging the new Minister not to remove the closures. He shot himself inthe foot when he said that they may be able to make a different decision "in two or three years time when we have better science". He also suggested that the main argument against the closures was that it wasn't tough enough and that there was a push for a total ban on all fishing during the closure periods. Thank god he's gone.

Coral Bay New Years
Submitted by greeny on Thu, 2008-10-02 19:28G'day all
Spending new years with the boyz in Coral Bay, be there from the 27/12/08 to the 3/1/09, Stay at the Bayview Caravan Park so if anyones up that way at that time let me know and we will catch up for a beer and if you don't have a boat im sure i can get ya a spot on mine or one of the boyz boat.
Now the question?
I know about the s/zones for spear fishing in coral bay but is it still a good idea to take the gun or better to just leave it at home.
Can ya still get good fish out in the deeper water out of the s/zone or am i just kidding myself.
We all dive so the cray better watch out.

exmouth strategy
Submitted by wayneleech on Thu, 2008-10-02 19:24i'm heading to exmouth tomorrow morning. Just thought i would put up a quick post to
see if I could get some feedback from any 'exmouth' experts out there:)
I've just had a look at the seabreeze report and with the
following in mind I'm trying to decide on a "plan of attack" for
where to launch from. (have a 5.4m ali
and 4x4)
Seabreeze report:
http://www.seabreeze.com.au/graphs/wa4.asp

As we are based at yardie creek caravan park I was thinking
that we should probably launch from the marina on sunday then try our luck on
the west side (launching from tandibiddi) on mon/tues/wed. Do you think this would be the best way to
go? (Ideally I would like to launch from
the tandibiddi ramp all days though not sure if these conditions suit.)
We are only up there for 6 days so we're trying to make the
most of what the weather gods dish up!
Cheers
Wayne
Freshwater
Submitted by GusG on Thu, 2008-10-02 15:18Anyone here been chasing trout anywhere? I have really been getting an itch to head south somewhere and chase some trout, either on fly or lure. Was thinking of heading down next weekend (11-12/10) and just wondering if anyone knew of any fish being caught?
Also, where can I get a freshwater licence from? Are they sold at tackle stores here in WA?

My new rig
Submitted by Simon C on Thu, 2008-10-02 06:19After much debate and analysis of financial situations I finally did what congress could not and got approval from the financial controller to by a new boat. Much as I would have liked a nice big center cabin the only rule was it had to have somewhere for the young fella to sleep so SWMBO could come out for a fish occasionally.
Really was leaning towards a 6m haines or similar, but after taking a close look at the old boat I really don't deserve to own anything but plate. Really wanted something that would handle going out wide, was big enough to overnight on, but still easy to tow north and launch on dodgy ramps and maybe even the odd beach.
Had been looking around the web for a while and had my eye on a new Stabicraft so went to the boat show and there she was, a brand new 659 in just the colour I wanted. Signed up on the spot and here it is. Handles the rough stuff beautifully, bone dry no matter what and is a dream to fish from as it does not list at all. Electronics are a 585 with a 1kw and a 8200 lowrance GM which is an awesome GPS.

rod and reel advice needed
Submitted by papasmurf on Wed, 2008-10-01 13:31hey guys,
im looking at getting a new outfit for flicking soft plastics and lightly weighted baits in 20-40m of water. i will be using it to target pink snapper, harlies, baldies, etc. i was thinking of maybe a Penn Slammer 560L. has anyone had any experience with this reel? also, what rod would go well with it? im looking for something that has enough grunt to pull a demersal out of its cave but also have enough feel to cast soft plastics. i would probably spool it with 15-20kg braid.
thanks in advance.
